A Q&A with Robyn O’Brien

Question: What inspired you to write The Unhealthy Truth? Have you worked in nutrition or science over the years?

Robyn O'Brien: My background is motherhood and finance (I helped manage $20 billion in assets prior to having four children). When I realized that the United States recently allowed certain chemicals into the US food supply in order to enhance corporate profitability while countries around the world either banned or labeled these ingredients, I felt an obligation to convey to American eaters what eaters around the world have known for the last 15 years.

Question: Scientists claim that these ingredients have never been proven harmful. What is your response?

Robyn O'Brien: That these ingredients have never been proven safe, either, which is why governments around the world have not allowed them into their food supply. Health data presents a different picture than the one being claimed by industry funded scientists: for example, according to the American Cancer Society, the United States has the highest rates of cancer of any country in the world and migration studies show that if you move here from another country, your likelihood of developing cancer increases fourfold. Additionally, it is important to note who is funding the scientists making these claims and whether they serve on speakers bureaus for industry.

Question: Why is the U.S. the only developed country to have allowed these substances into our food supply?

Robyn O'Brien: In the United States, we allow ingredients into our food supply until they are proven dangerous. In other developed countries, substances are not allowed into the food supply until they are proven safe--a precautionary measure that puts additional burdens on corporations in the form of testing requirements and extensive research and development. This precautionary principal protects consumers, not profits.

Question: Why would the U.S. do this?

Robyn O'Brien: I think that the answer is two-fold. Looser standards and deregulation allow for enhanced corporate profitability. On top of that, I believe that we have a flawed federal policy when it comes to health care: under our commercial health care system, there is profitability in our illness. In the U.S., almost half of all Americans have at least one chronic disease. If other developed countries had populations as sick as ours, their economies would suffer given that health care is not a for-profit industry overseas.

Question: If you could speak to our government leaders about this issue, what would you say?

Robyn O'Brien: I would grab Michelle Obama and make sure that she joined us! And then I would talk about budget allocation: If we allocate $600 billion to the Pentagon and only $2.4 billion to the FDA, how can we expect the FDA to ensure the safety of the food supply?

If we allocate government and taxpayer funded subsidies to farmers growing crops laced with chemicals and then charge organic farmers fees to prove that their crops are safe and then fees to label them, how could organic food ever be affordable to everyone?

Safe food is a social justice issue. We are a nation of 300 million eaters, and I think we deserve to have the same food standards that other developed countries have.

Question: Until there is change on a national level, what can we do as individuals?

Robyn O'Brien: Take baby steps. It’s important to remember not to make "the perfect" the enemy of "the good." We live in a real world, where kids go to Chuck E. Cheese for birthday parties and get blue cupcakes. Do what you can, when you can.

Target the 80/20 rule, as I highlight in the book: do as much as you can to try to reduce your families’ exposure to these substances 80 percent of the time, then give yourself a ‘free pass’ for the other 20. Instead of blue yogurt, opt for white yogurt and add sprinkles. Instead of using the full packet of fluorescent orange powder on your kids’ mac n’ cheese, use half of the packet. Chances are that these baby steps are going to feel so good that you will want to do more. There is a lot that we can do to protect the health of our families, we just have to get savvy about it!

A real wake-up call
Research for a new project led me to this compelling story of one mother's deep dive into what's driving the childhood diseases that are becoming increasingly commonplace.Anyone dealing with picky eaters? Children with ADHD? Unexplained temper tantrums? How about children with eczema or skin rashes that won't go away? The South Hampton Surprise section and The Grandmother Guideline in her book is for you. Her research supports it.I couldn't help but wonder why have other countries around the world dealt with these dangerous toxins that affect our children when our own United States does not? The answers she provides are shocking.

The Unhealthy Truth is not a new nutrition book. It is a book that lifts the veil on what is actually in our food- even our "unprocessed food." It sheds new light on why we Americans are in this food allergy epidemic. I love this book. It is powerful, bold and inspiring. While it is aimed at parents, and written by a parent, it is a must read for everyone who eats: that means you.

I have some food sensitivities so I am much more open to the concept that the food we take in dramatically affects the way we feel, think and even sleep. After years and years of going to different doctors, and right when I was about to go on two more prescription medications, I started a gluten-free diet and pretty much ALL my ailments went away. It was a mixed emotion thing when I realized that this wasn't a fluke and that I really was better. My husband was so thrilled to not have me swinging back and forth b/t digestional pains, stomach pains, and daily headaches (well, the combo of gluten-free and staying away from Diet Coke cured those headaches). We could finally hit dinner and a movie without me clutching my stomach saying I couldn't make it. On the flip side, I was also really angry that this whole time my problem had been a DIETARY issue, and it had gone undiagnosed. Oh, plenty of prescriptions were thrown my way for ulcers, headaches, acid reflux, excessive stomach acids...but no one ever thought to say "Hmmmm, what do you think is CAUSING this?" I mean, sure, they asked about STRESS. This always made me laugh...let's ask the lady who has three small kids and keeps starting new businesses and is married to a husband who is either starting a new business, turning around a business or is working for a start-up if she's stressed. The question itself stresses me out! Oh, did I mention that my gluten-free diet even made my monthly mood swings and cramps almost disappear? My kids are so happy as I used to be a mean mom for a few days each month.....

OK- So the book. It's not a book about gluten-free, I just wanted you all to see first hand my path which taught me that food really is responsible for much of the way we feel day to day. The book is about how we Americans have an ever increasing rate of allergies, asthma and diabetes and how all these autoimmune disorders (yes, allergies, asthma and diabetes are all autoimmune disorders) have a direct relationship with the way we live: our environment and of particular interest, our food. Robyn O'Brien, founder of Allergy-Kids, makes a very compelling case. Read this book.

O'Brien, "just a mom" three years ago, had a child diagnosed with an egg allergy. 3 of her 4 kids ended up with food allergies and she started researching WHY diligently. In some ways, this really is a book about just how far reaching one person's passion can carry- even when up against some formidable foes. And, wow, does she have some formidable foes. She'll inspire you. Read this book.

The connections made in The Unhealthy Truth will make anyone pause and think. I can't imagine ANYONE dismissing her theories out of hand. This is not a political book, but my gosh the connections made between industry and the influence over our FDA throughout all the previous administrations since the 1970's is astounding. Remember what I said in the second paragraph about my headaches? Gluten-free and getting rid of Diet Cokes, I was spending 3 -4 hours a day in bed during May 2008. I had no idea where this daily head pain was coming from. My friends and family were getting really worried. I had heard a bit about an Asparatame- headache connection and thus I decided to stop drinking Diet Coke. Within 3 days my headaches were so much better, but not all the way gone. They would disappear completely 6 months later with the gluten-free diet. With that background, when I read in The Unhealthy Truth about all these buried studies about seizures and serious neurological issues connected with Asparatame, I wanted to jump up and down and scream "Me TOO! My head hurt like CRAZY!" Read this book.

Do genetically modified (GM) foods scare you? I always scoffed at the idea that they should scare us. I mean, really, who cares? Farmers have been slowly genetically modifying everything from cows to corn for centuries. The truth is that we should be concerned. We have scorpion poison being genetically modified into our vegetables to make them resistant to insects. Scorpion poison......and much more. I'm not scoffing anymore. O'Brien theorizes that the introduction of GM soy into most of our processed foods in 1996 (approx 70% of all American processed foods contain GM soy) potentially caused the huge peanut allergy epidemic we all directly or indirectly deal with daily. Read the book to see why this theory makes sense as a full explanation here would require another blog post.

O'Brien masterfully connects the dots and let's us decide if we really need to be eating these things and why so many countries around the world have banned them. Did you know that in England, the Walmart arm, called Asda, as well as Kraft, Coca Cola, and Mars candy company have all voluntarily removed artificial colors, aspartame and even the preservative sodium benzoate from their products? (I don't even want to get into how sad it is that these are American companies changing, for the better, foods for a non-American consumer group when ours stays the same.) The South Hampton study, that O'Brien sites, makes it painfully clear on the relationship between these artificial food dyes, mixed with the preservative sodium benzoate, and hyperactivity. Since the artificial food dyes are almost always paired with this preservative, it makes sense to study their combined effect. After reading, I took my kids off all these dyes, for the sake of my HIGHLY ENERGETIC son. My daughter said to me today, after 3 weeks of this, "Mom, Charlie is sitting pretty still at hook up now. He used to get warnings from the teachers because he was going crazy. But now, he is SO good!" I think he now finally CAN be still as I'm not feeding him bright orange mac'n' cheese, cheese it's, orange gold fish, cake with red icing, and Gatorade! Read the book. You'll see if you too want to experiment with no food dyes....

There is so much more in this book and I'm passionate that everyone NEEDS to read it! Davis Kidd just got in 20 of these books yesterday (as they usually only have a couple on hand.) So, run by TODAY and get it. If they run out, just put your name on the wait-list, they'll order more. Just published, this needs to be the Nashville cocktail conversation as I'm sure there will be some that say "B.S" while others who dramatically change the way they and their families eat. No matter which side of the aisle you come down on, at least be informed enough to make the decision. Read this book.

This is not a book on nutrition per se; it is a book explaining how what we eat is not necessarily what we think we are eating. Our corn, soy, milk, vegetables and more are not what our parents raised us on. And the Pop Tarts, crackers and mac n' cheese are definitely not the same. All you have to do is look around at all the peanut allergies to KNOW that something weird is going on. Read this book. Go to Davis Kidd TODAY.

I have very much enjoyed reading this book. I have read many books on food and food allergies (as I and both my children have extensive allergies), and this book adds more knowledge and depth to the issue, yet is written for the "lay" person.
People like Doris Rapp have been talking about allergies, toxins in food and the environment for decades, and still it seems that the majority of the US public believes that there could be nothing wrong with GMO foods, pesticides, additives in food, etc. I know so many families dealing with allergies, and the fact that so many countries do not allow the additives in food that the USA does, it is then amazing to me that mainstream medicine isn't at the very least investigating the possibility of this connection. Thank you to Robyn for continuing the "charge"!

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis as a teen and learned in my 30s after following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet that my symptoms disappeared when I stopped eating foods that I was allergic/intolerant to (foods that I didn't even know I was allergic to). Subsequently, I had all kinds of people with IBS, IBD, and food allergies come to me asking for advice. I noticed that there was an epidemic of food-related diseases with no explanation for the rising numbers. Meanwhile, gastroenterologists told me that if a changed diet cured my symptoms, I didn't have ulcerative colitis in the first place--this despite multiple biopsies confirming the diagnosis.

I had done a little research on food allergies and knew some of what Robyn presented. But as someone trained in research and who ethically carried out pharmaceutical trials, I was crushed to learn that the people and the system I trusted have let us down. Like Robyn, before I experienced the health that a changed diet created, I thought people with multiple allergies who shopped in health food stores were crackpots. I thought parents who blamed their child's autism on vaccines were paranoid. No more. I no longer trust research scientists or government agencies who are supposed to protect us. I didn't want to believe Robyn's book, but I do and my health and my family's health can only benefit as a result.

There are a couple of issues raised in the book I do not agree with. First, Robyn mentions eating vegetarian one night a week to reduce global warming. Robyn, you say to ask, "Who's funding this?" Now that your book is finished, read Red Hot Lies and begin to study who's behind the climate change proposals. Find out how the data are being collected and despite your friendship with Mrs. Garcia, I'm afraid you'll be forced to conclude that we can't trust climate scientists either.

The second issue I disagree with is Robyn's implication that socialized medicine might provide the incentive for government and industry to keep us healthy. I agree that the current system provides no incentive, but unfortunately the profit motive is the only thing that will drive new and better treatments. Socialized medicine will collapse our economy, result in rationed care, draw the best and the brightest to other fields, and ensure that new and better medications do not get into the hands of those who need them. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I don't think it's socialized medicine.

Robyn, if you're reading, I do have a suggestion for you. As a psychologist, my state does not allow me to have business dealings with clients for a number of years after counseling them. Why don't we try to enact a requirement that members of the FDA cannot have had corporate ties prior to service and cannot have them after? After we've cleaned up the FDA membership, why don't we require corporate research monies to go directly to the FDA to be distributed to universities as they see fit (anonymously when possible; in other words, the university tests a product and doesn't know that it's Merck's, for example). The FDA would then do all the data analysis and reporting. Any monies or contracts between corporations and universities outside of the FDA relationship would become illegal and would revoke the approval of the FDA. Corporate monies could then be used to fund the FDA, decreasing the need for taxpayer money. Lord knows we need to find ways to decrease our tax burden!

This is a riveting book. I couldn't put it down! I hope now that the issue won't be put down and we as Americans will demand safe food.

I actually didn't "love" this book, for two reasons: 1) the truths in question are revealed strip-tease fashion, a little bit at a time, and I was soon wishing for an executive summary; and 2) each truth, when it is revealed, turns out to be more unpleasant than the other. It's probably necessary, however, to write popular books in this fashion and give the reader time to trust in the author's credibility, for one thing, and to begin adapting to the sheer enormity of the message she brings. So please forgive me for not attempting to encapsulate that message here - you really need to read it as Robyn O'Brien tells it.
It's been several years since I began learning all over again how to feed myself safely; the effort has vastly improved—possibly even saved—my life. I'm gaining many helpful tips from "The Unhealthy Truth" but it's also clear that there's much more to say about modern agribusiness and how to cope with all the changes it's brought about in our nutrition. Look for more books on the topic. Hope they're as good as this one is.

A must read for everyone especially parents with children. I personally learned a great deal about allergies and how they can manifest themselves and what is the cause of the skyrocketing rate of allergies in the past 20 years and the unhealthy truth which is who is responsible and covering it up by having taken over the regulatory agencies in charge of our safeguard. Also had heard that there was considerable controversy about Soya (especially the genetically modified) and never paid much attention to it till reading this book I don't eat any soya since then. Chapter 3 titled Soya Secrets which caught my attention upon browsing the beginning of the book will definitely get most people want to read at least that chapter
