About the authors

Rising from the depths of extreme poverty, Omarosa Manigault Newman was the only African American senior advisor to the 45th President of the United States Donald J. Trump.
Her unbelievable journey from Youngstown public housing projects to become a global TV sensation on the NBC hit show The Apprentice is spellbinding. Known by only her first name OMAROSA and utilizing the backdrop of her tumultuous childhood and her own personal tragedies to fuel her life lesson, she takes listeners on a journey that celebrates triumphs over tragedies.
Omarosa Manigault Newman has traveled the world lecturing. Most recently she has lectured at Harvard University, various business conferences and the United National General Assembly. She has delivered a moving sermon in Jerusalem during a trip to the Holy Land where she was also baptized in the Jordan River.
Omarosa’s greatest passion is her lifelong commitment to urban ministry, at-risk youth and ending homelessness. She has worked on behalf of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Positive Vibrations program in Compton, CA and the Fred Jordan Mission, on Skid Row in LA. She has participated in both domestic and international missionary work in Compton, Ferguson, Baltimore, New York, Nigeria, Senegal, Haiti and the Gambia.

Omarosa has known Trump through continual meetings and phone calls since 2004. Omarosa is really smart and incisive. (For example, read her strategy for becoming a celebrity in the Apprentice: "A black person won't win in that first season, but there are other ways to win by playing a certain part.") The Trump organization demands absolute loyalty, and Omarosa tells how, in return, she has benefited a lot from her association with Trump.
In 2015, she wanted to work for Hillary Clinton's campaign and was part of the "Ready for Hillary" PAC. After Hillary decided to ignore the "Ready for Hillary" PAC with strong African-American representation, she then received a personal call from Trump asking her to join his campaign.
Omarosa is basically a liberal trying to help the African-American community (and minorities and women) but working on the inside. With her experience from the projects and growing up lower class, her style is direct and honest, without the occasional silences or euphemisms that you would find among many middle-class writers. (This reminds me of my own father who grew up in a Jewish family on welfare, and who would remind me how people from the projects prefer to speak directly rather than speak around some sensitive subjects.) She reviews well-known incidents for context in an honest way that both left and right would agree to.
The book can be divided into three parts: early years and association with Trump and the Apprentice; working on the Trump campaign; and working in the White House. The middle part is a bit slow, but the first and third parts are fascinating and incisive. There are enough "inside details" to keep one interested, but what is special for me is her insights into the internal mechanisms that created the circus atmosphere that we mostly have known only from outside journalists' articles. In particular, Omarosa was the only senior African-American among about 30 APs, and she worked extremely long hours especially to help the situation of African-Americans and minorities. She feels that too often, her work was hindered by others either with other agendas or out of sheer ignorance. (A notable example is her comments about Betsy DeVos, Education Secretary, and how Omarosa feels that DeVos's real agenda is to replace public schools by for-profit schools -- Omarosa: African-American parents should be able to choose between the two, rather than simply have public schools closed down in minority districts and preference given to publicly supported for-profit schools.)
Omarosa's time in the White House became a time of searching her conscience whether Trump was a racists, or simply "racial" as she had always said up to then. It was a slow evolution given all the benefits that she, a black woman, had received from Trump. But as she weighed Trump's generous help to a black woman against the mounting evidence in the public spotlight, the reaction of Trump to the Charlottesville march of the KKK, neo-Nazis, and alt-right became the final straw. After that, she had started planning her exit in January, 2018, when General Kelly ambushed her in December, 2017.
Omarosa, Keith Schiller, and Trump's family are the primary people in the White House who Trump had known for a long time and who could keep Trump grounded and in touch with ordinary Americans. Omarosa and Schiller are gone now, but Omarosa knew Trump from 2004, and can comment on how Trump's health and mental acuity have diminished by 2017. This has become a "political football" with critics using it against Trump and with Trump doctors hiding any concerns. (Dr. Bornstein said that his public assessment of Trump's health was dictated to him; and Dr. Jackson reported in 2018 that "Some people have just great genes. I told the president that if he had a healthier diet ... he might live to be 200 years old.") Omarosa was _the_ longest friend of Trump (or TrumpWorld) in the White House, and she freely admits that she is not qualified to make any formal medical assessment. But her anecdotal observations make her worry --- for a previous friend, and for the nation. With her directness from the projects, she had tried to alert others in the White House to this, and kept getting told that this is not something that one talks about.
Because it's Omarosa, I really wondered if her book would be truthful or if it would be full of lies for the sake of making a buck on book sales. I bought the book yesterday, finished it today, and have to say that it was an enjoyable read. Only the people who have worked with Trump know whether the things she's written are actually true, but the account she gives seems credible (for the most part). The insider details seem believable (she doesn't seem afraid of fact-checking), and confirm a lot of what we've already known. There are new insights. Some places where I laughed out loud, gasped, or screamed at the book in frustration at some of the things she revealed about those in Trumps cabinet and outside of it. (See General Kelly and Betsy DeVos and Paula White!).
Overall there isn't a ton of new information about Trump or Trump world. She takes you through the inner workings of the campaign and the White House. There are some interesting stories that you haven't heard before, but really just snippets here and there. If you're looking for a book that lays out a clear consise case for how Trump is 'Unhinged', and for that info to take up the bulk of the book, you will be disappointed. I was 60% into the book before she even started talking about the campaign. Which was frustrating. A book called 'Unhinged' should mostly be about insights into Trump's behavior and mental state, and her work with him directly in the White House. You really don't get to that until around 80% in. Instead it's more the story of Omarosa's career, how she met Trump at The Apprentice, and how they both benefited financially from working together over the years, and why she felt loyal to him despite his flaws, to the point of wanting to help him with his campaign and work in the White House.
The second half of the book is largely devoted to her efforts to support the black community through political initiatives while the black community had written her off as a house slave. In this book she really wants people to understand all she tried to accomplish in the midst of a racist administration, and how she eventually came to realize that Trump was indeed racist, and she couldn't deny it or put up with it any longer.
Now that last part is the part of the book that is not believable. She paints herself as a loyal friend of DT, who was trapped in his cult of personality, and couldn't allow herself to see him for what he truly was. I believe Omarosa had plenty of chances to see what he truly was. She knew about the possible existence of the 'N-word' tape early on in the campaign, and rather than check to see if it was true, she surged ahead fighting for team Trump. If you read this book you will learn how well educated Omarosa is, and how much political experience she has. Much more than I thought. Before joining the Trump campaign, she was even working for a Hillary PAC. She had worked in the Clinton administration, and for Al Gore. She says she campaigned for Barrack Obama, and admits she knew Trump decided to run for president because of his feelings of disgust and jealousy for Obama. How could a woman with that much education, experience, and insight be so blinded that she'd switch parties and promote a man she knew wasn't qualified to be president, and to work on a campaign she knew had no real platforms? A man she knew had had multiple affairs, which could possibly become a liability to his campaign down the road. I just don't buy it. I believe that while all of the other details in this book may be true, the idea that she was too blind to see the truth is her attempt to rewrite history to justify her support of a dispicable person. She divulges lots of information about herself, but I don't believes she ever gives the readers her real reason for supporting Trump. She's not making herself out to be angel by any means. She owns a lot of her behavior, but I do think she's being disingenuous here.
Aside from the fact that I think the title is a bit misleading as to what the bulk of the book is about and my doubting that she didn't really know that Trump was racist, this actually is a pretty good read.

Her voice is a powerful one and one that should be heard. Don’t buy the book if you are looking for juicy gossip or tales out of school. Oh, some of that is there, but mostly she just tells a story. It is further evidence of who and what Trump is and she pulls this off without bashing him or being overtly bias. In fact she talks of her great affection and admiration of the man. Nor does she come across as a disgruntled ex employee.
I really wanted to walk away disliking her and be a critic, instead I develop a whole new sense of appreciation, and admiration, for who she has and how she got there.
The shenanigans of people working in the administration are more to preserve their jobs than work for the country.
Sad!
