How to Watercolor Selina's Art

How to Watercolor Selina's Art
I am laid up with a bad hip that needs surgery. I can't even clean my bathroom right now! I wanted to color, but I didn't want to color animals with mandalas all over them (bo-ring) or children's simplistic designs, so I opted for the Unicorns and Dragons book. I had bought some Arteza Watercolor Pencils with water brush pens, and some watercolor paper. I ordered the Unicorns and Dragons book because it wasn't too simplistic. While I waited, I received an email from Selina with 12 more downloadable sketches! Instead of printing them out on regular paper, I printed them out on the watercolor paper. You can see the difference in the two photos; the girl with the Unicorn is far more clear, while the Fairy Dragon with the roses (which I also colored, then water-brushed) that came straight out of the book is far more wrinkled and corrupted, even with a piece of watercolor paper under it to brace it.Since Selina is kind enough to have duplicate art in her books, I carefully tore apart the 2nd half of the book and made copies of the pages on my printer, using watercolor paper. Make sure that 1) You use the 'rough' scored side of the paper to print on, as the shiny/smooth side will make it more apt to run and 2) if you use paper from a pad of paper, make sure that the 'glued' edge goes into the printer last to keep it from binding. I also had to trim the watercolor paper to match the normal paper size, as it comes an inch /a half inch too large. Cardstock is NOT the same thing as watercolor paper, as it has two smooth sides which allows the paints to run.I really love Selina's art, and am glad I discovered it. It is not so intricate that it makes you bored or frustrated, and yet not so simple that you can finish it off in a half hour. I will be watercoloring these prints all thru my recovery time, and am glad I could find something that is so inspirational and attractive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite!
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2019
This is officially my all time favorite coloring book. There's a nice balance between detailed and more simple lineart to keep me engaged with. (And the topic is just perfect - I love dragons and unicorns - that's why I bought it after all). All the designs are pretty and nicely thought out. There is no wondering how to color it because the artist tried to put too much detail into the lineart. At the same time, there are some simpler linearts that don't get so simple that it becomes a bore.

The book has two sets of the same designs. It's a pro if you mess up or want to do more than one version of the design. It's a con if you don't like that one design; now you're wasting two pages. For me, there isn't a design I don't want to do! I also decided that the first set were ones that I could give away to others, and the second set I would keep for myself. What a win-win!

The art in this coloring book are beautiful.
It says you can use markers, but would not recommend that. Bleed through and the colors don't blend together as they should. But with color pencils the book is a blast.
