Review

"Comprehensive...unique and wide-ranging...easy to use and would delight any diehard football fan...recommended" --Library Journal

"Unique." --American Reference Books Annual

"Greatest resource was the bible of NFL numerology Uniform Numbers of the NFL. The tome, written in 2005 by Rutgers reference librarian John Maxymuk, is a comprehensive numerical directory of every player to wear an NFL uniform through 2005, Maxymuk chose his all-time team by numbers, though we differ with some of his picks. That's what makes it fun." --Sports Illustrated

Invaluable book, with instant access to uniform numbers for every player who ever played in the NFL. Very easy to research, broken down by team in numerical order. Excellent Book!

Compiling the numbers of almost everyone who ever played in the NFL is unprecedented, and the book would be amazing for that alone. But Maxymuk has also used the opportunity to provide interesting information about the players (like which ones played other pro sports, which became head coaches, which became referees, etc.) and about the teams -- origin of the nickname and the names that almost got picked instead, oddities unique to a particular club, etc. -- a great mix of facts, figures and fascinating trivia.

If you are a fan of history, statistics, and football, you will enjoy turning the pages of this book. It is not a sit-down-and-read-cover-to-cover book, more like a reference book to preserve the details of teams and players. I especially liked the defunct team information, some teams I had never heard of and some I had forgotten.

Lots of work went into this book and I commend the author for a job well done!

Surprising but this really is a good book and reference to have. It was published in 2005 and could be updated but it is an excellent history on players through their uniform numbers. Recommended.
