The flashlight comes with an EverReady 9V battery. All you do is snip off the plastic wrap and start using it.
The center position is "OFF". Flip the slide switch right and the middle two LED's light up for "LOW". Flip it to the right and all six LED's light up for "HIGH". Feels like a good quality switch. The light seems pretty solid overall.
The beam has a very good color for "cool" white 5mm LED's. I have a dislike for blue/purple beams. I was very pleased that the LED's in this light are better than most.
The beam angle is quite good for both up-close work a few inches away and peering across the room or walking around the house.
The heavy duty battery was measured at 10.1 open circuit voltage. Here is the current draw from this battery:
"LOW" 35 mA
"HIGH" 78 mA
Next, I hooked up a Tenergy Centura low-self-discharge Ni-MH 200 mA*h regchargeable battery that was recently charged and reads 9.3 open circuit voltage. Here is the current draw from this battery:
"LOW" 33 mA
"HIGH" 87 mA
The LED assembly snaps on securely; doesn't seem likely to come off in normal usage. The LEDs are recessed, which I like. The pak light LEDs protrude so that they are more exposed to possible damage, plus the light tends to shine in your eyes.
I have 2 pak lights I use around the house and they are great flashlights. But I tried carrying one in my pocket, and it had a tendency to turn itself on. I would pull it out and it would already be on and running down the battery. This light has a more recessed and smoother switch that doesn't seem as susceptible to accidental turning on. Also the switch is larger; the pak light switch is tiny.
Another (minor) thing I liked is the included battery is black, which matches the LED assembly, so that's kind of cool. Standard battery though, not alkaline.
My one complaint (to Amazon) is that this flashlight didn't come up when I searched on "9 volt flashlights" or even "6 LED flashlight." I only found this because it came up as a 'suggestion' at the bottom of the page when I was searching on the above. Perhaps because it's sold by a 3rd party. Anyway, my initial impression is very positive and I will probably buy more as gifts unless some problems develop.
I've had this for a couple of weeks now. I've tried carrying it in both my front and back pocket and no problems with accidental turning on. LED's also remain securely in place.Read more ›
Overall, a great item to have during a power failure or in the car, purse, or survival bag. The product could be improved by having an option for the LEDs to flash and by having a red plastic cap for the bottom of the battery that could be taken off and placed over the LEDs so that one could maintain their night vision when camping at night. Overall, IMHO, a great product.
