Newsboys are back with a musical celebration that joins the veteran bands past and future. United is more than just an album. This reimagining melds old and new versions of this GRAMMY-nominated, platinum-selling act into a modern day supergroup. Its also the follow-up to 2018s history-making Newsboys United Tour, which welcomed back band founder Peter Furler and beloved alum Phil Joel. Newsboys also includes frontman Michael Tait (dc Talk) and longtime members Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis. The projects debut single, Greatness of Our God, is a triumphant worship track with a unifying message of hope. Vocals are shared between Furler and Tait, and rounded out by the entire band, delivering a multi-layered experience that reminds us why Newsboys have endured for decades. The entire album resonates with passion and heart, making it sure to thrill Newsboys fans past, present and future. One of the most influential bands in Christian music history, Newsboys have sold more than 8 million units and delivered 33 No. 1 radio hits, earning four GRAMMY nods and multiple Dove Awards. Their platinum-certified megahit Gods Not Dead inspired one of the most popular Christian film franchises of all time.

Every song from the opening Greatness of Our God, which reminds me of my two favorite songs He Reigns and In Wonder, to Rejoice on the Deluxe Edition, have all the elements of a great newsboys album. Be warned that this is less of a 90s Going Public/Take Me To Your Leader sounding album and more of an Adoration/Go/In The Hands of God album with some God's Not Dead feel to it. But it is still great!
"UNITED" stays in the same vein the band has been in for the last 10 (15?) years with mostly corporate worship focused tunes, but it's solid. There are a few duds (Fun to have KMax join for a tune, but "Love One Another" is a lowpoint on this record for me, and I may have a bone (or two) to pick with "Beautiful Story") but overall this is a fitting addition to the post-THRIVE worship-oriented Newsboys. It just feels good to hear Furler and Joel's voices in the mix again, and call it bias but I feel like the songwriting really reflects a step up with their return, too.
I'd love to have a solid pop-rock record from the 'boys again, writing some songs about life, love, faith, family, and God that aren't intended to be sung congregationally. But that's not really what's filling arenas or picking up radioplay right now, so I'm not going to hold my breath...
The sounds of the CD were familiar and yet new with the voices and musical talents of former members joined with the current members to create that sound. The appearance of Peter Furler and Phil Joel brings me back to when I first saw the Newboys in 1998. I was hooked. I hope that there is more to hear from the Newsboys United.
