I was given a copy of this as an ARC for an honest review along with the first book and not even halfway through I went and bought both books. I had to support Regina Morris by buying them because they are great. This book was better than the first and it was good and I really enjoyed it but this one was so much better. She was able to make it seem like it could be real. I mean you are reading about the vampires but it is almost like you forget they are not real and they could be your best friend, neighbor, co-worker or just anyone. Now I liked Sterling in the first book and I could see that he was maybe just misunderstood or hiding something behind his tough manwhore ways but wasn't sure. I just knew I wanted to know more about him. I am so glad I read this book. He story is a little heartbreaking because like a lot of us he has "flaws" and he feels unworthy because of them. This is a MUST read for anyone but especially if you like paranormal. It has everything you could want in a book! Mystery, crazy cults, action, and steamy love scenes. I knew I wanted to read it when I finished the first book in the series but with this one I am hooked and can't wait for the next book

I have to say, I enjoyed this story. United Service by Regina Morris, is part of a series; however, it can be a standalone book.

Sterling is a vampire who works undercover for the government. He has the ability to touch objects and receive information from them—psychometry. It’s a gift that helps him and his uncover team capture villains, but it’s also a curse. After Sterling uses his ability to get a lead on a case, he’s plagued with horrendous headaches, and his entire body itches. The only things that relieve those maddening symptoms is rain water and having sex with a woman who freely wants to. He can’t compel them to hop in bed with him because if he did, his pain won’t subside. So for over a hundred years, Sterling has used women to remedy his ailments. He’s never been in love and has given up on the idea of having a mate. He’s a half-breed, which in the land of Harry Potter, is equivalent to being a muggle. Pure-bred vampires tend to look down their noses at Sterling, so in his mind he has no hope to ever marry within his kind.

Sterling and his team are working on a case where vampires are being murdered. After the killer performs his brutal act, he kidnaps the offspring. These children will eventually become vampire themselves and a wacky religious cult called The Hands of God knows it.

Kate is a pure-bred vampire, and a nanny to a child who gets abducted. Kate winds up helping Sterling and his partner when she discovers The Hands of God has the child who was in her care. At first, Sterling is annoyed by Kate, but then he can’t deny his fierce attraction towards her, as well as his curiosity.

Something is not right about Kate.

She’s hiding a secret.

Her behavior with Sterling is running hot and cold, perplexing him.

This book starts off by informing the reader that a select group of vampires known as the Colony work for the U.S. Government. But I found only a brief mentioning in the story about protecting the President of the United States from anything.

I will only be highlighting certain aspects of the book due to the many reviews that already given plenty attention to the unique storyline.

The first part of the book describes Sterling, the half-breed vampire and his attitude towards life. He uses his unique ability to read the history of an object by just a touch and this assists him when he works different cases. When using his special skill his resistance is lowered causing him great pain. The only cure is the sexual willingness and touch of a female.

Moving on, Sterling is working a case interrogating a serial killer at the penitentiary that acknowledges that the last woman he killed vanished into thin air. The author comes across with a miss-lead not acknowledging where the evidence room was located. From the evidence room Sterling unique talent tells of the serial killers last crime. Then Sterling goes hunting for a woman to ease easy his pain. Then author breaks off of this criminal suspense case leaving the reader hanging.

The author then jumps to Fang Manor and all the Colony vampires and their families that live there. This includes his unresolved issues with his father.

Sterling moves on to a new case, adult vampires that are being murders and their young to-be-vamp children are being kidnapped by the group "Hands of God." Here is where the author suggest to the reader another criminal thriller starting as the Colony tries to locate the latest missing child.

Now enters the nanny Kate.

I will begin this by saying I am a giant paranormal lit fan; I have read a lot of books in the genre, and they are my go-to when I want to relax into a good read. I've also beta read a few paranormal romances. I picked up this book on a whim after seeing it in one of the Kindle Book newsletters, and I'm glad I did. I am inspired to go back and read Raymond's story after completing this one, though it took me a while to warm up to Raymond... perhaps I should have read that one first! The H/h relationship in this book is very interesting and symbiotic. I didn't expect to be sympathetic towards a H who was essentially a manwhore, whatever his reasons (I'd rejected a book recently from a favorite author for a similar H) but the author managed to make him sympathetic and likeable. I would have liked to have explored the h more, her history and life before meeting the H. The intimacy was brief and came close to fade-out; I prefer those scenes to be a little more graphic, but that's just me, and that said, this book isn't so graphic that it couldn't be revised slightly to be a YA romance. I'm giving it 4 stars, mostly for concept and the interesting dynamic between the H/h. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series, and hope that eventually a book is done for the Hawaiian boy vampire Kekoa who seems to have a lot of potential as a stand-alone character.
