So in this review I can effectively comment on the differences between a "vintage" (1990's era) example and this currently available one:
(1) Original map placed the "Old World" on the right-hand side, a more traditional arrangement, so the Prime Meridian appears more or less the center line of the map.
(2) Original map showed some distinct "white" elevation shadings (i.e. for heights greater than 4000 meters) whereas the new one shows no "white" landforms at all (except to denote ice in the polar regions). This reduces the overall visual impact of the map.
(3) On the original map the tiny-font black print (used for city names) was very clear and sharp. On the new map, the print is the same size but the letters are not as distinct - you can use a magnifier to aid readability but it just makes visible the slight blurring of the letters.
Overall, it's still a very good thing that this map is available for such a reasonable price ($11).
Lamination is nice, but adds substantially to the cost. If you want the map laminated, call your local Fed-Ex Kinkos to see if they have a large laminating machine. We've done this with other maps with good results.
