I give it Three Stars for itself with one extra for all the ideas involved in the set up of an Alternative Universe Viking America. That last star however is a promise of the future publications, probably in a future planned trilogy because neither this book or the snippet from Loki's Rage its sequel covered anything of the sort.
Sure we see the Norsemen setting up a small Colony and explore some of their trials and tribulations but the Colony could have been anywhere and we learn nothing about the wider world except that they are fleeing the spread of Christianity.
Not really a huge criticism but don't be fooled by the title and cover this book isn't about the United States of Vinland its a quick look at the very beginnings of the very marginal Colony that I guess will one day far far in the future grow into the seed of a country that will grow into the United States of Vinland.
What is a real criticism is that the book is really far too short to cover the story it wants to tell, above I said 'acquainted' and that's all it is, a nodding acquaintance, we don't really get to know these people or how they live, we just get a quick overview of events and some detail on few of the major goings on it could really have done with being at least twice as long.
Looking forward to Loki's Rage but I do hope we find out more about the people and world of Markland, would make it much more enjoyable IMHO.
Reservations aside, I figured why not? So I found an enjoyable book, with no regrets in my purchase, and look forward to the next in the series.
The overall story is an alternate history where Vikings (Norse) actually settle, and not just explore, North America. There is no real temporal context as to exactly when the story takes place, but the Battle of Svolder is mentioned as a contemporary event, which would place this about 1000 AD or a few years afterwards. I am terrible at geography at this scale, and there's not much external context, but I figure Markland is probably Newfoundland, or about the same location as explored by Leif Ericson about the same time. There is even a character named Leif in the story, but he is not surnamed, so I don't know if the author is having fun playing historian, or if it is just coincidence.
This book covers the landing and settlement(s) of Markland, and the initial contact with the native peoples. As the subtitle indicates, this is the first part of a trilogy. The author ends with a footnote that indicates he would like to explore a rather large era of history (and geography), so it'll be fun to read and try to out-guess the author, a game I've already played in this first book.
Altho I did spot a few trivial errors, the book was well edited. The narrative was generally concise and direct, never feeling muddy.
Overall its a very enjoyable book and I look forward to reading the rest of them.
The writer also has an interesting style - the text reads in a Norse voice - one of the hardest tricks for any writer to pull off . This helps pull the reader in to the story and establishes a view of the world from an insider's perspective (in this case the medieval Norse) that helps to bring the story alive.
Five stars and I'll definitely be buying the next one.
