The performance of this hub is just fine. Zero problems using it with a variety of USB 3.0 and 2.0 devices. The fact that it includes a power supply ensures that power-hungry devices (such as external drives) will function well.

The overall design is decent good. It's compact, but still manages to provide access to 10 ports. The ports are all arranged around the circumference of the hub. Port spacing is fine on the long sides and just OK on the ends (the ports on the narrow edges are a bit closer together than the ones on the long edges). The power and USB inputs are next to one another on the back. The overall dimensions are about 5 inches wide and 2.75 inches deep.

The case is plastic with a high gloss finish. Looks nice clean, but a real fingerprint magnet.

The power adapter is on the large side (about 4.25 inches long and 1.75 inches wide) but it's an in-line transformer, which I greatly prefer to the "wall wart" approach.

The build quality is just OK. It's very lightweight and I can feel the plastic case flex when I push on it. The seams are not as tight as they should be. It has 4 feet on the base but they don't do a very good job of keeping the hub from sliding on my desk.

It performs well and certainly should be considered if you need a large number of ports, but the build quality knocks it down a star.

QUICK SUMMARY: Very versatile USB 3.0 hub with the unique feature of having ports on all four sides. Speed performance on par with what you'd expect to see in real-life scenarios. But the blue light is blinding (but easily covered over).

BACKGROUND: My college son used this hub to test with his home-built gaming PC, which has built-in USB 3.0. We used external hard drives connected either via USB 2.0 or 3.0, both with and without this hub -- to see what performance issues, if any, we'd see when using this hub (we didn't find any issues). We used a spare Western Digital Green drive (older model), which you should know is a s-l-o-w drive, so take our speed results with a grain of salt. Your performance could easily improve using a better hard drive. Plus, there are so many other factors involved when doing speed tests, so everything in the review just suggests that the hub performs well, as you'd expect it to. My son used a test utility that transferred a 1GB file.

SPEED TEST RESULTS:

Connected via USB 2.0 - WITHOUT THE HUB:
Read: 29.41 MB/s
Write: 23.67 MB/s

Connected via USB 2.0 - ** WITH ** THIS HUB:
Read: 29.46 MB/s
Write: 23.54 MB/s

Connected via USB 3.0 - WITHOUT THE HUB:
Read: 68.28 MB/s
Write: 81.49 MB/s

Connected via USB 3.0 - ** WITH ** THIS HUB:
Read: 71.66 MB/s
Write: 80.29 MB/s

The only thing to dislike about this hub is a BLINDING blue indicator light that is ridiculously bright. When we get devices like that, we just put a piece of silver duct tape over the light, and that dampens the light so it's still illumined, but it doesn't light up an entire room.

CONCLUSION: Very good price right now on Amazon, and very flexible to use with the placement of all 10 ports. Recommended! (Vendor supplied free item for unbiased product review).

I decided to write a review on this hub after one year of use so that I can give the viewers a "real" review. This hub has really surprised me. After going through three two others in a six month period, this cute little box is still working hard and looks just as new and beautiful as the day I received it.

Let me see, I run it ragged so I am grateful. that it comes with the power supply. At this moment, I have four hard drives attached to it and they are big drives from 3TB to 4TGB. I have not clocked the speeds to see if this reduces the transferring from one drive to another because I don't expect the speed of the drives to be the same as if directly connected to the computer. However, I am extremely pleased of the results. Being a software engineer and studying for my graduate degree, I can tell you that I am on my computer at least 15 hours day (no kidding), so all my drives must have top level performance. In fact, although I have been considering a NAS due to huge library of stock images and other elements stored on my huge drives, this hub has really kept me from going through that expense. In fact, I just purchased another external hard drive that I probably will also be connecting this hub.

I have used approximately a dozen similar products, and by comparison to the others - from various makers (some well known and some not so much...), the UNITEK brand is on par with its features and build quality. With 10 USB 3.0 ports it seemingly offers a lot, but remember to gain the USB 3.0 speeds - it must be connected to a USB 3.0 port on your PC or Mac. The device also has limitations in that it can obtain speeds up to 5Gbps, but with 10 ports if you had devices all drawing from the hub at the same time, that it highly unlikely.

On the package I received there was a sticker that read: "UNITEK USB 3.0 10 Port Low-Speed (1.5Mbps) - New". The box says: "Y312 USB 3.0 Superspeed 10 Port Hub". Not sure which one to believe, or why the discrepancy?

This hub has a 12V4A power adapter and a USB 3.0 data cable with the hub, which works with Windows XP, Vista, 7 8 (8.1 also works) - 32 or 64 bit. Macs are also supported.

I had most recently been using a 7 port EasyAcc hub that started not being recognized by my Windows 7 PC. I swapped it out with this Unitek one. While I'm not crazy about the layout of this hub (I prefer them all in a line), it works. I will update this review if and when it fails, but out of the box for two weeks - it's been good. It does get warm to the touch, which I hope will not affect its long-term durability.

NOTE: I received this product from the manufacturer in exchange for my honest review.
