I wanted to recover the files from old disk from a failed PC. I removed the disk (you don't have to), I plugged the disk into this converter, plugged in the power adapter and plugged the other end into a USB port. Then I opened my list of drives, found the old drive in the list, opened it and copied all it's files into a folder in my new computer. Note, you can't copy programs over. If you can't find the installation disk of programs that you bought but can find the authorization code, you can download the programs from web. If the disk failed in the same computer that you are installing the new disk in and you upgraded from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 to Windows 10, you can download a free copy of Windows 10 without an authorization code.
Didn’t work out of the box. Device didn’t even power up.
I ordered another and requested a refund. I’ll update if the second one is functional.
Update: second device also does not power up. Also returning that one and will be shopping elsewhere.
Update 2: after playing with it for a bit without returning it, it seems that the device works OK, just not as described. This WILL NOT work for any 3.5” HDD as the external power adapter literally does nothing. Turned on my computer and it read a 2.5” hdd just fine though. I’m still returning it.
I like everything about this USB to SATA adapter. Many USB to SATA adapters do not ship with an external power source which, for most people, is acceptable but I was using Raspberry Pi boards which are constantly starved of power when electron-saved peripherals are plugged into it. The included power supply for the adapter solves that problem. Data transfer speeds between the Raspberry Pi 4 (USB 3.0) and the SATA drive through this adapter have been phenomenal. This is the kind of product I like: good at doing what it was designed to do without compromising itself by trying to do too much. I would purchase again. In the photo it's back and to the right.
I chose this SATA to USB 3.0 converter because it supports everything I may need to attach to my server temporarily. I've used it on a SATA Bluray/DVDROM, 3.5 inch HDD's, 2.5 inch HDD's and all have worked fine. The option for the added power is something most of the other choices don't offer and it's important because the USB can't provide sufficient power to drive the Bluray/DVDROM player or the larger 3.5" HDD's. It can provide power for the 2.5" drives. Once connected, it works as expected. All cables are detachable. The USB cable length is about 22", which is plenty of length for internal and external usage.
This works in a pinch -- if you have a small drive, say a 2.5" SATA you need to access, this gizmo just may be what you need. I was using it for a 3.5" SATA drive, which was still inside it's hard plastic "box." So it was heavy, much heavier than this SATA adapter, with the USB and 12 volt adapter cords. So the adapter kept falling off, as it doesn't snap onto the hard drive's protruding piece (plug?) There are other, more pricey adapters by this same company -- IDE, SATA, etc., in one unit, and these worked better for me. However, I suppose this smaller one would work if you're really patient, and I'm only talking about the bigger drives here. For small 2.5" SATA drives, it may be fine.
Works fine, a bit cheaply made but for occasional use, it’s suitable. I suspect this will not last daily use but for semi regular use, it should be fine. Note that the cables ports feel a bit flimsy when you plug stuff in. My guess is a lot of plugging/unplugging will cause these ports to break loose eventually. If your doing a set it and forget it one time plug in, then I’m sure it would be fine for that use as well. Directions are a joke. As with anything like this, just assume it has embedded spyware. Would not recommend this for some entry level forensics person cutting corners to recover grandmas family photo album. Buy a quality docking system for those jobs.
This same device can be found under a few different brand names, some with a blue LED like this one, some with a green LED. It's easy to tell they're the same product by viewing photographs of the different brands.
I don't know who the source manufacturer is, but it's made to a fairly high quality of build. It doesn't feel like it needs to be handled oh-so-carefully for fear of damaging it. It's very compact and connectors fit well: USB, SATA and the AC power. The only thing I'd change is the length of the supplied USB3 Male-A to Male-Micro-B cable, but the 2.5 feet or so supplied should be plenty if your PC's case is on your desk top. My PC sits on the floor under my desk, and my desk top is 3x6 feet, so I purchased a needed, longer cable to use this device with drives on top of my desk.
I have no SSDs yet to try this with, but it fits and works with all of my 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs, as well as my 5.25" optical drives. The AC power adapter is NOT needed for typical 2.5" drives, but it IS needed for 3.5" HDDs and 5.25" optical drives. It's also hot-swappable as long as an attached drive is not being accessed by the computer at the time.
Speed seems about right for a USB3 device such as this. I burned and verified a 4.5GB single-layer DVD in around 8 minutes while burning at a fixed 8X speed.
One point worth mentioning: This device will idle or 'sleep' a drive attached to it after a period of inactivity, while connected and powered., and the 'wake-up' time is noticeable. It's most apparent with HDDs; not so much with optical drives.
Overall good quality, a fair price, and a very convenient little device.
I have a computer who I think the mother board died. My dad who is a bit better with computers than me was telling me the Hard Drive is probably gone. I looked at some youtube videos and thought otherwise. None the less I took the $20ish gamble on this. It was excellent I was able to access all my data after I pulled out the hard drive. It did take about 5-10 minutes for everything to load so I could access it but it really saved my behind. Was really worried some important business information was lost. Worked exactly as described, for someone in a jam like myself $20 was well worth the price and pc of mind.
I had a lot of HD's gathering dust and all I had was an old SATA/IDE converter and it never picked up 90% of the disks. Thankfully I believed it was at fault and purchased this Unitek adapter. In the end, only one HD was at fault so thanks to the Unitek adapter, I saved some drives from destruction and used them elsewhere.
5.0 out of 5 starsNo need to throw away old optical drive

I bought a new PC that didn't have space for my old blu ray burner. Didn't want to throw it out or spend £50+ on an external caddy. Took a punt on this and it works flawlessly. Well worth the money.
Everything you need to connect those old HDD to your computer. I needed to shred some data on a few old disks - no problems connecting them with this USB device.
Serves its purpose well, no issues with reading and powering a 3.5" HDD. I've been mainly using it as a power source for a fan controller in a TV cabinet. No issues so far.
