Right out of the box, you can feel a significant difference in mass between the original AC adapter and this replacement. This one obviously has no transformer in it and likely does some type of switching to get down to 9V. The original weighed in at 15oz, almost a pound. This retro-bit adapter tipped the scales at just under 4oz, not even as heavy as a quarter-pounder with cheese. Just by reading the ratings on the back, the rated power output is MUCH less than the original SNES adapter. The Retro Bit is rated for 350mA, while the original is rated for 850mA. I suspect this could be a problem in certain conditions, such as various temperatures or games that push the processing power limits of the console. It worked fine for the few minutes of testing I conducted.
So while this adapter works for the SNES, I would very carefully read through the user experiences to see if it actually works on other systems.

I bought this to replace the original AC adapter for my SNES. In that capacity, it worked. I powered up the Nintendo just fine and even played a couple of games.

The pros - it works as intended and will power up a Gen1 Genesis (says "HD Graphics" on the top), original SNES and NES. The power output is identical to my factory SNES power adapter. It is also the same voltage for a Gen1 Sega CD unit (drawer type). On the NES and SNES I saw no issues while powering any games I attempted with it.
It is lighter weight because it is a modern power converter, and will not heat up like the classic units. It would have been nice if they had made it a smaller brick.
The cons - it is NOT enough power for later generation Gen1 Genesis titles. While older titles (Sonic 1, Columns, Streets of Rage) power up fine, it struggles to give enough juice to handle later titles (such as Sonic 3). If purchasing to use with a Gen1 Genesis there are much better options, including a RetroDC solution which can power the Genesis, SegaCD and 32x off a single wall outlet.
It is also providing DC power, which is not what the original NES used for power service. The original NES adapter used 9VAC output, instead of 9VDC. This will not damage the unit, but be aware that it's not the exact same power output as an original unit.

The box isn't even what's on the page, it's just some Chinese crap. It does NOT work with the genesis model 2. It works with my SNES, but I already have an adapter. DO NOT BUY THIS AT ALL COSTS. I'm returning it and it hasn't even been in my house for a day.

So this PSU works- at least it does on my SNES Jr (I haven't tried it with a game that has a SuperFX or something like that).
However, for comparison the SNS-002 PSU (Stock Nintendo) is rated for 10v/850ma. This is rated for 9v/350ma. This means the SNS-002 can produce ~8.5w of power vs this adapter that will only produce ~3.15w of power. This could be problematic for carts or peripherals that have more power draw.
I should note that, from what I'm reading on my multimeter that the RetroBit PSU is actually putting out 9.6v of power (putting it closer in line with the SNS-002) which means this is doing closer to ~3.5w.
I also verified that the adapter is positive outside / negative inner before risking plugging it in so at least they got that right.
I'm not sure if I'll keep this thing considering the lack of available power for the console. You're better making one yourself (using the various good PWR PSUs on amazon) or heading to eBay and grabbing a working SNES PSU.

Update: I ended up returning the device because I started to have graphical glitches. I wouldn't buy this.

bought this for my Genesis 1, it fit but did not work. red light turns on but nothing. Tried it on my SNES to see if it worked at all... it powered the SNES up and worked, took it out of the SNES and it was so snug in the socket that it pulled the plastic round piece in the middle off. now my SNES is broken. very upset. When filing a return Amazon gave me a message to not bother returning it and they just refunded the money instantly... so they know this is bad. This is not fair. How do I make them pay for breaking my beloved childhood console?

OEM SNES Power Supply: 10v 850mA output.
This Aftermarket Garbage: 9v 350mA output. (not enough voltage, not enough current)
It's mostly air inside which explains a lot because I bet this circuit gets hot as hell, and needs to dissipate that heat somewhere. Let this serve as a reminder that you should track down (or refurbish) an original OEM supply if at all possible. These cheap after market power supplies just don't cut it.
Additionally, there is another "gut shot" picture posted by By amazon user Borano on Nov 17, 2019... and you can compare his pictures to mine, and see that the quality of this supply has gone even further downhill (his power supply actually has full-wave rectification and some additional minimal protection, unlike mine). AVOID THIS RETRO POWER SUPPLY AT ALL COSTS!!!

If I could give this Zero stars, I would. While it may *TECHNICALLY* work for a short while... due to the insufficient current, I can say this unit with it's poor design will be taxed to the point rapid failure, or even potentially becoming a fire hazard (absolutely no UL or other safety certifications I could find), let alone damaging your vintage console. I would describe the circuit design as horrible and inadequate and a great way to permanently damage your vintage console. I won't bore you with the nitty gritty electronics details of what makes the design bad, especially for vintage equipment, but I will say this: I refuse to even test this power supply to even verify it produces power, let alone connect one of my systems to it.

Not good. Adds distortion to your picture because this is cheaply made. If only they could make high quality power adapters like the original... alas they just make the cheap stuff. I bought this as a second power adapter and can verify 100% that it certainly adds distortion in comparison to the original... I'm a huge retro gamer and this is just unacceptable.

Decent adapter with flaws likely cause by low power output from the adapter.
Reviewed in Canada on October 2, 2017Verified Purchase
So I ordered this adapter for my SNES without paying much attention to the fact that it is a universal adapter for NES, SNES and Genesis Model 1. Interestingly enough, one night before it arrived my Genesis model 1 power supply kicked the bucket, and so I ended up with two different devices to test this on as I will now be relying on it for two of my consoles. Here's what I found:
PROS:
- Lightweight
- Multi-Console feature is useful
- Puts out less heat
- seems to be built well enough inside, doesn't look like a bodge job
- Powers my Genesis Model 1 and SNES, no problems with Super FX games and Virtua Racing for genesis (also has a processing chip in the cartridge)
- looks pretty nice
CONS:
- Needlessly bulky.. the insides take up about 1/4 - 1/3 of the brick.. most of it is hollow plastic.
- SNES has very, very mild video noise. Again, you have to be on top of the TV to see it, but it is there nevertheless.
- Genesis Model 1 video looks great, but the audio has sort of a loud, low hum with this adapter.
- Technical specs on the adapter but it at far too low current for the consoles it was built for, which would probably explain the AV problems.
- built pretty cheaply, doesn't feel like it was made with a durable set of cables or like it would withstand the years like the old adapters.
All in all, I am a very picky person with AV, and I found the issues to be mixed. For the SNES, the video problem is so mild I don't pay any mind to it, however the Genesis audio noise really sucks. If you want to reproduce it, pop in Virtua Racing or Sonic 3 and listen to when it hits the SEGA logo. Fortunately for me, I have a 32x and the sound problem doesn't seem to occur when I use that.
I'd give it a 4 out of 5 because it's a very decent product with some slight issues that some won't mind, but will drive others up the wall if they are hyper picky.

I would give this 0 stars if I could, it is absolute garbage, it made my Genesis 1 squeal, literally
Reviewed in Canada on September 3, 2020Verified Purchase
There is not enough amperage for the SNES nor the Genesis Model 1. These are absolute 100% garbage. You're better off taking your money and throwing it in there, rather than giving it to Retro Bit for the privilege to throw it in there yourself. I wouldn't buy it if they gave me the money to do it. I might consider purchasing it for my worst enemy, so long as the money got lost along the way, and didn't go to a company happy to sell garbage like this. BUYER BE WARE, YOU'D GET MORE RELIABLE POWER THROUGH A FORK IN THE WALL! DON'T DO THAT, and DON'T BUY THIS ... Duct, its not even a Product, because that would have at least 1 pro, and it is non-existent with this black plastic piece of garbage.
