Universal Designed Smart Homes for the 21st Century: 102 Home Plans You Can Order And Build (Ring bound for flat easy reading) Ring-bound – January 1, 2005
Enhance your purchase
The book is a worthy addition to the creative resources available on Universal Design. In fact, it is one of the better house plan books that have been produced, in large part due to two reasons: the general design quality of the home plans offered and the inclusion of useful information not normally seen in such publications. The home designs are well laid out with attractive facades and interesting options.
Periodically throughout the book are informational sections on related UD topics. Some of these are what you would expect, yet others represent important additions that here-to-fore have not been included with universal design. These features include healthy home and green design, safe-rooms for resiliency as well as refuge from storms.
The back 25 pages are room-by-room features and benefit lists that are useful for new homes and remodels. The last 3 pages are references and resources. These additions offer genuine useful information on how to provide holistic home design solutions. This makes the book a seminal how-to, UD home design resource. Perhaps it is for this reason that this plan book is collectible and continues to rise in value.

"Universal Design is not truly usable unless it is affordable. Over the years I have received so many inquiries about affordable universal design and accessible housing. Mr. Schwab's book, Universal Designed Smart Homes for the 21st Century is the definitive source".
Cynthia Leibrock Architect, MA, ASID, Hon IIDA:

"I love this book! Mr.Schwab shows that inclusive design and beauty can both be achieved without sacrificing either. His Universal designed homes enable everyone, as well as people with disabilities and their families to live comfortable, safe, and first-class lives in beautiful universal and accessible homes, just like everyone else".Kathie Snow Author of: Disability is Natural: Revolutionary Common Sense for Raising Successful Children with Disabilities
"The book Universal Design Smart Homes is an excellent perspective on potential savings of US health care dollars, providing accessible housing to so many"boomers" and others, including Veterans, and to further open avenues toward economic stability. I applaud Mr. Schwab's continued efforts in that regard. I think we're all in agreement with where we need to go, it's just how to get there that remains the question.Thank you for your service to this country Mr. Schwab in many ways".

About the author

Mr. Schwab has been a Universal Design (UD) building specialist since 1990. After an internship in CO. with experience in residential and hotel design and construction, he returned to the Midwest to begin his practice as a licensed architect. It was after his Grandfather suffered a series of strokes that he became aware that most American homes may not meet the needs of the elderly or people with mobility impairments and other disabilities. Mr. Schwab has focused on UD & accessible home design as well as light commercial and ADA compliance since 1992.
During completion of his book."Universal Designed Smart Homes for the 21st Century", he suffered a bike accident that left him with a shattered left arm humorous and implant prosthetic. He found his rental home at that time to be partially inaccessible even with this type of disability.
In 2015 his Mother suffered a severe fall at the childhood family home that resulted in paralysis. Like many people, his Mother wished to stay and recover at home as long as possible. This experience again informed Mr. Schwab that the typical, standard American house design most often does not and will not work for an aging population or those who wish to live independently after paralysis, a fall resulting in injury or safe life-time living.
Since that experience with his Mothers falls, Mr. Schwab reimagined UD and access home design for families with disabled children as well. Research includes how home healthcare can be made more affordable when the home is fully optimized so that it offers long-term benefits for people of all ages and abilities.
Mr. Schwab contributed PN Magazine, the magazine for the Paralyzed Veterans of America in a column called Around the House from 2010 to 2017. He contributes to EP/Exceptional Parent magazine for parents of children with disabilities and writes for various newsletters, journals and magazines.
He is an advocate of independent living at home, "aging in place", UD and accessible home design. He appreciates comments from the general public and good old-fashioned phone conversations.
Mr. Schwab is a drawing and watercolor artist, philatelist and numismatist. He loves plants and gardening. He is an avid history buff and fluent in the German language where he studied architecture for a year when studying environmental design at CU Boulder. He is an avid book reader (and writer, at this time). he also enjoys meditation time walking along the bike path of the Mississippi River where he now resides and practices UD home design nationwide and globally, in some cases, from the Quad Cities USA.

I also want to compliment you on the wealth of additional information that you have provided. This is highly unusual in this field in comparison to all other works of this nature that I have seen, including that of builders who claim to incorporate Universal Design and Green Building.

"The education and the Universal Design awareness of living in a home for a life time is clearly displayed throughout the plans and explanations in the 3rd edition of Universal Designed Smart homes for the 21st Century by Mr. Schwab. This book is a must for contractors, consultants and home owners who value beautiful and functional homes that enable the entire population to live with ease"
Nancy S. Makay, Universal Design Consultant
