I purchased my home in 2009 and the builder installed eight USI Electric smoke alarms. Over the past two years, I have replaced the USI alarms because the USI would repeated either false alarm or would emit the dreaded chirp (always occurring in the middle of the night, usually around 3:00 a.m., requiring me to drag myself out of bed, get the ladder out of the garage and spend the next hour dealing with the alarm). The USI would go through batteries like crazy yet even with new batteries installed the dread chirp would start up a week later. Finally in frustration, I researched the internet and Amazon finding out that: (1) USI alarms are terrible and (2) Kidde alarms are wonderful. I started replacing all of the USI alarms with the Kidde PI2010 smoke alarm dual sensor about a year ago and now have one USI left which will be replaced this week. If you are having false alarms and/or excessive chirping due to low battery (even though you replace the batteries annually) do yourself a favor and replace with the Kidde alarm.

These are a perfect replacement for the units in my house. I bought about 10 of these, one was defective (therefore, only 4 stars). For those interested, there is an expiration date that is in raised plastic in the URH corner of the battery cover that indicates an approximate 10 year lifetime. The originals in my house lasted a little less on average, although one is still going after 11 years.

These units aren't fancy, and are smoke detectors only, i.e. no CO or heat detection. No problems. The reason I chose these rather than others is just that they are the same as the original units in my house. BTW, even though they are relatively inexpensive, if you need a lot of them, it can add up.

Follow up: I just downgraded this to 3 stars. This is NOT because the unit doesn't work, although how would I know? Rather, it is still more of a Q/C issue. I have had two whose batteries failed within less than 6 months. Now, this is easily fixed; however, when the unit starts beeping at 2am, it isn't a lot of fun to have to go get a ladder to disconnect the thing.

Another followup: Well, I have had these for a little over a year. I have now replaced ALL the batteries that came with the units. My recommendation is to do this before you install, and save yourself the problem of doing this in the middle of the night. I deducted another star for this really annoying and lousy quality control

While we have a full security system in our home, we also had two of these units installed when we completed a new addition. Believe it or not, they each lasted about eleven years before failing with a loud and constant wailing--at 3:00am on consecutive nights. Being somewhat confused and tired on the night when the first one went off, we thought that they were wired into our primary alarm system. When we tried to disable them on the alarm panel, it set off our main system resulting in calls from the security company monitors. Unfortunately we forgot that they were independent of the primary system and our efforts to disable them actually caused us to set off the main panel. OOPS! I finally figured out how to disable them and pulled the front panel off and disconnected the battery. That worked so well the first night that I was ready for the second one to go off on the next night. I wish that I had simply disconnected the second one so that we didn't have to deal with another alarm that second night. Live and learn. So if one of these does fail in the middle of the night, just pull off the front cover by twisting it to the left and then pull apart the plastic battery connector.

Then order two of these USI 1204's. These are the perfect replacement. You don't have to mount the new base that comes with it, just remove the top part with the battery in it, pull out the plastic sleeve to activate the battery, and twist the new cover into the old mount. A green light should come on and you're "good to go". Good price, fast delivery, and easy to install.

Bought these to replace the existing units that were installed when our house was built in 2002. The existing units had started to fail (the alarms were going off!). The new units fit in the base of the existing unit, so I didn't have to replace the bases.

Bought this as a direct replacement to one that went haywire in our house, mind you this one was probably 12-14 years old. This was an identical direct replacement that plugged in and worked as it should.

Arrived a day early, and worked perfectly upon installation. I have 9 others hard-wired and interlinked. This replaces a combo natural gas-CO-smoke detector from the same manufacturer, which had natural gas nuisance alarms into its 2nd year. I got tired of this, so now all 10 sensors are the same model.

My smoke detector was reaching old age, and beeping. Ordered this which was identical and fit the ceiling mounting perfectly.

Ordered seven of these for my home. Only 5 of the seven worked, had to make four separate calls to get it resolved. So now I have to either order 2 more or return the five that worked. In all fairness to the person I spoke to at USI and the Amazon representatives, they were all polite and tried to resolve the issue of me just wanting to exchange the 2 units that were not working but the fact is 2 of the 7 failed to function properly right out of the box. I also had to return the 2 and now reorder. What a hassle, I should have purchased something else locally.

The price was right but the product was oh so wrong! Waste of my time!
