The book charges along in Macy's usual quick, quirky style with great dialogue and thought provoking scenarios. As with most of his work, I read "The Universe Next Door' in a couple of days. I just seem to get so wrapped up in these books that I binge read them.
The story was fast-paced, the plot well thought out, and the characters realistic. The science didn't strain credibility too badly; the author avoided the temptation to get lost in detailed explanations that would have distracted from the story (and probably contained things that would lessen the overall credibility).
The vulgar language was a bit jarring, but notice the humans don't talk this way. It is just something that the main character taught the aliens while stuck in a long, boring, frustrating situation, for his own amusement. And the longer it went on, the harder it would be to undo. One does wonder why the aliens don't catch on, though.
alternative universe where birds are the intelligent species. It does have some scary moments with ancient reptilian creatures. I sent my sister
who loves birds and science fiction, a gift certificate for this novel. Bravo to your amazing imagination, Al Macy.
