Gr 5 Up—Divided in three segments, "Bang!," "It's Alive!," and "Great Apes!," and using quick, simple verse, this title describes the development of life and the universe. Two narrators, who greatly resemble Albert Einstein and his wife, take readers through the big bang, early life on Earth (shedding light on amoebas and organelles), the extinction of the dinosaurs, the eventual developments that led to human life, and the basics of the genetic mutation. The images slowly transition from black and white in the first section to unobtrusive color in last section. The narrative does not distract from the artwork and neither overcomplicates nor oversimplifies the subject. Young students will revel in the artwork, while older kids could use the text as an introduction to advanced high school science. A welcome addition.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA
Fantastic… a masterful demonstration of how even complex science can be made fun and engaging --Wired
This children's science book could help save the US economy --Gizmodo
Dr Seuss meets Big History! Modern science is generating a modern origin story, a scientific narrative about the origins of ourselves and everything around us. Everyone alive today needs to know this story, especially those going to school, and James Dunbar's books provide just the introduction they will need. They are fun, beautifully illustrated, and easy to understand, though not afraid of some technical stuff. (And adults will surely enjoy them too!) --Professor David Christian, Macquarie University, Sydney, and Ewha Womans University, Seoul Author of Maps of Time - An Introduction to Big History

I have to say that I was very impressed with this book right from the start. I suppose I missed the whole "verse" part of the title. Indeed, the book is written entirely in verse which is no easy task when you think about the fact this book begins where there was no form of the worlds. I was seriously amazed!
What makes the book even more special is the illustrations are done in comic book form lead by two characters, male and female, one of which looks very much like Einstein. Is that intentional? Yes, it is very scientific but not at all boring.
The first half of the book is all in black and white which adds to the idea that the universe was forming and it took a long time. The second half is all in color which again speaks to how the universe was formed.
I enjoyed this book immensely for all of the reasons above. In addition, the book is much larger and a bit heavier than I expected. This in itself added to the book, after all, the book is about the universe!
If you are a person who believes in the biblical formation of the universe then this is not the book for you. However, if you believe in a scientific explanation and want to teach it to your children, then I highly suggest this book and no other.
This book gets 5 stars from me.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for my open and honest opinion. As I have mentioned before with other books I have reviewed, I am open to different thought processes on a variety of subjects. I've shared Dunbar's work with a lot of people and they are uniformly impressed with it. I've order 18 books as gifts for my friends and clients (plus one personal copy for each of my kids).
Dunbar is getting a lot of recognition and deserves it. I'm surprised that a publisher didn't jump on this book a long time ago. I expect that he will sell millions of copies and that publishers will be all over it soon enough.
The Universe Verse is a fun and very accessible book for kids and for adults. It shows that science can be interesting and accessible, from both an intellectual and an informational perspective.
I was so happy to see all three books (BANG!, It's Alive, and Great Apes!) combined into a sturdy hardcover, making it an instant classic.
If you're looking for educational entertainment, look no further!
