For my sons birthday he recieved a small Spirograph type gift that he loves. The problem is I noticed that it only contained the round discs and thought he would enjoy the odd shaped ones like the football shape, triangle, cross, etc. Took one look at this and said well this will work....YEAH RIGHT...See the shapes on the cover...NOT included...only the round discs.

I wrote the manufacturer and this was there response....

I'm sorry you are disappointed with this product - it is one of the favorites and sell thousands. Some kits have running changes done and to change artwork everytime is quite costly - but the package does have a disclaimer that products and colors may varie from those shown as well as a contents list - on the back. Thank you for your comments.

What a crock of ****!

I will never buy another Cra-Z-Art product again. Just incase, you know, I order a doll for my daughter based on the packaging and they send a GI Joe!

Stay away...Stay Very Far Away from their products.

After agonizing over which one to buy, I went with this one for the price and basic "beginning" features. It came with 3 templates with about 4" centers to put the gears into, a circle, an oval, and a kidney bean. The templates also have little cut outs like stars or squares for a little extra drawing fun. It also came with 7 different size circle gears, from about 1/2 inch to 2 inches in diameter. Each circle has 5-12 pen holes in a spiral configuration that allows for about 100 or more different designs. It also came with paper and a couple of short color gel pens.

The gel pens are kind of low quality, nothing to write home about. The set is heavy duty colorful plastic, and we have a lot of fun with it. However, the templates need some holes in order to tack them down or else they slip easily. We first held with one hand and spiro-ed with the other. You have to push slowly or the gear can slip out, but after a few practice tries the drawings come out nicely.

Now we use a wooden cutting board, tape the paper to it, and then use push pins through the little cute cut outs to hold the template down. Works good for the price of the unit. Why pay $75 when $15 will get you the experience you want, and it should last at least about as long as the enthusiasm does.

On a recent trip to a local store, I found a Hypotrochoid Art Drawing Set, which reminded me of the Spirograph that I played with as a child. The packaging was sealed, but it was on sale, so I went ahead and purchased it. Wish that I had seen the images here on Amazon first - that one comes with 6 gears and 3 frames - but it's actually 2 sets of the same 3 gears, and 2 of the frames are the same size. (The holes in the gears are small, so only the 3 pens that come with and Pilot Precise Extra Fine V5 pens - which are more expensive than the set - work.)

Next, I found the Create Your OWN Spiral ART kit at another local store. Also sealed, this one has 2 frames and 5 gears - problem: because of the teeth on the gears, only 2 large gears fit in the large frame, and 3 small gears fit in the small frame, but the shapes are interesting and most pens work with it, so it works pretty well.

Thought I had finally found my answer when I saw this (Cra-Z-art Spiral Set) from the photo on the box, and the product photo that shows gears of multiple shapes (football, plus sign, etc). The set that I received included 3 frames (round, oval and kidney bean shaped) and 7 ROUND gears of varying sizes (the number of teeth are marked on each gear - 17, 18, 22, 27, 29, 30 & 33.) No other shaped gears - just round. One good thing about this set is that the holes in the gears are large, so just about any pen will work. For the price of this set (and since I'm an Amazon Prime member, I received free shipping)I'm not unhappy.

But at this point, I wish that I had put all the money that I had spent on all 3 sets and the Pilot Pens together to find an old, real spirograph set.

This is definitely not the same toy I had as a child. The little wheels slip so easily, even for an adult. My five year old gets so frustrated that she just uses the stencil parts. She likes the pens included, which are the really short novelty pens. Overall the quality does not meet my expectations.

I had Spirograph as a child and I wanted to get it again as it's really fun and cool to do. Since the original Spirograph version has changed too I thought I would try this version. It's alright I guess, but you have to press firmly when doing the desings and the pens wear off really fast...nice try though...

Our girls are 6 and 4.5 and they have both enjoyed this set. It is easier for the 6 year old to use as the 4.5 year old is still learning to hold the paper still with one hand while swirling with the other. As for ease of use, overall, it has been smooth and enjoyable for our family.
