First, altho' the series implies that the dog is a main character, that is NOT to case - the poor dog is a bit player at best and it's not at all clear why she even has a dog in the series - he has no role. Even more irritating is the main character's utter lack of responsibility as a dog owner - what rationale dog owner would (a) buy a very large dog to live in a NYC apartment, and (b) never apparently walk said dog on any regular basis - really, when you get up in the morning, the 2nd thing you do is let your dog out - the poor creature has "held it" all nite just like you do. This character stumbles home drunk and passes out (no mention of letting the dog out), gets up, has her coffee & shower then maybe walks the dog. Honey, in real life, that dog would not be waiting patiently for you to "get ready" - you'd be cleaning up more than a chewed sofa cushion.
Second, how in the world does this character support herself, let alone the dog? A NYC apartment on a barrista and then a dog walker salary - really? Further, as a dog walker she is a sorry mess. About midway thru the story (where I stopped reading out of irritation) she seems to simply stop walking her charges - too busy sticking her nose where it doesn't belong in solving the murder and I guess the poor dogs just have to deal with not being walked.
Finally, and then I'll stop ranting, why in the world would a rational human being do what this character does? If you found a mutilated dead body of some stranger, would you feel compelled to put yourself and your loved ones in danger to "solve" the murder? Mysteries where non-police or pis are investigating crimes usually revolve around the character wanting to solve the murder of a loved one or prove themselves innocent of a crime they are accused of committing. That's maybe far-fetched but at least logical. Why in the world would a cop actually want this girl's help- why would he encourage her meddling - I thought maybe he was manipulating her because she was dumb enough to do his legwork. Why do the other characters (in NY) provide all this information to some random young woman just because she asks? What rational motivation is there for her to go crawling around in tunnels and basements chasing murderers? It's hard to feel any sympathy for a character who so determinedly puts herself and those around her in danger for no particularly compelling reason. And don't cite nancy drew or miss marple - yeah, they are busybodies too but at least their curiosity is usually grounded in some relationship they have and they usually do not go so far out of their way to be in dangerous settings with dangerous people.
Ok, enough. I absolutely do applaud authors for putting their work out there - and kudos to this one for the same reason - further, at least her books are not extensively peppered with errors, typos, and grammatical problems as in many self-published books. Additionally, her character is edgy and not the standard wholesome virtuous heroine - variety is a good thing. I guess she just hit too many of my reader "hot buttons" for me to appreciate the effort.
