There are a couple of typo's in the book but they do not in anyway take away from the story. I will say one thing for this book, the use of filler is almost nonexistent and that makes for a fast and entertaining read.I am very much looking forward to book two of the Voodoo Plague series.
If you even have a passing interest in the "zombie" genre, buy this book. I think that you will enjoy it as much as I did.
The book opens with a modern day (apocalyptic) damsel in distress. However, she's only in distress due to circumstances and we soon learn she's quite capable of holding her own. The feminists won't like this, but even the strong, independent Princess is happy to have Prince Charming along as long as he's useful. John Chase is certainly that. He's former military, highly trained and excellent with a gun and knives. Rachel, the damsel, is a med student who is an exotic dancer on the side to pay for her tuition. She's very intelligent, learns quickly and obviously has medical training. The two of them go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Along the way they find Dog who becomes just as much a central character as the two of them and it's quite impressive how well the author is able to do that. Dog's personality shines through and you quickly fall in love with him.
Few authors are able to move the story along without a lot of dialogue without bogging down everything in descriptions that are superfluous. Mr.Read more ›
His character development makes me wish these people lived next door to me. It was so easy to become invested in their lives.
I enjoyed his terrifying twist about the superiority of the female zombies. As an animal lover, I was thrilled that he added the story of Dog. As a Navy brat, I was able to recommend this book to my dad-not just because it is an excellent story but because throwing in information about firearms, survivalist gear, etc. makes this book a good read for so many diverse groups of readers. I am so anxiously awaiting the sequel and I hope that Mr. Patton happens to read this so that he knows how brilliant he is.

There is an interesting new twist on the zombies that works very well.
I prefer reading about real world people trying to survive, people like those next door or coworkers. Rambo type people are few and far between in real life so I don't relate to them much. In a real life situation, there would be far more average people trying to survive.
For those who like the tough guy main character I think you will enjoy this book.
When the author switched to third person writing... the read got better... sort of. It's a great civilian effort at trying to write about the military but was completely off. The roles and lingo just didn't match. Definitely needs a few military guys to do a run through on how real soldiers and airmen would speak. I think the writer meant to speak about the M240 bravo vs. the 'belt-fed M204 7.62' weapon.
I won't be continuing on with this series, I don't feel the realism element (even though it is TEOTWAWKI) that some of the other reviewers saw. But I think a lot of people might enjoy this read, and with Prime Library, it's worth the rental.

Characters and scenarios are believable and engaging. The story is compelling and the series is a page turner. Few military reference errors, but nothing overly distracting.Published 9 days ago by Amazon Customer
