I absolutely LOVED this story. There is a kind of preface before the dedication where the author explains where she got the story. I had to go back and reread it once I had finished "Unlike Any Other". I think she did a fantastic job meeting her goal.
This is an incredible love story (stories)...a beautiful depth and complexity that you don't run into frequently. I am so pleased to see this is the first book of a planned 5 book series...the only disappointing part is going to be the wait for the next installment.
The story and characters unfold and bloom over the course of the story. I was a bit surprised by the number of significant characters. With many spending some time at center stage, but this is really Gabe's and AJ's story. Planned sequels will highlight the other characters we spent time with.
Many twists and turns in the story...some I saw coming but most were a total surprise. It made for exciting reading and increased my inability to put the book down.
My emotions ran the gamut as I read. I loved and identified with AJ...she was seen as weak by so many until she revealed just how strong she really was. Gabe was so likeable until he wasn't. But I understood why he made the choices he made; though I really wished circumstances were different.
I remember running across this book and thinking the story was going to go one way from the story blurb and went somewhere completely different. It was such a pleasant surprise and now I really feel the need to get all of Ms. Burgoa's books! She is my kind of writer and she is exactly what I aspire to be.

With the rise of Indie authors, it is easier than ever before to find a good book for little to no money. It is easy to find a romance novel that will entertain me for a couple of hours before moving on to the next. Avid readers can binge read the same way some people binge on television thanks to DVRs and Netflix. The thing is, it is not easy to find that magical book that makes you think and feel deeply. You know, that book that is so well written, you can feel every emotion of each character as though their experience is yours. I laughed, cried, feared, fell in love, grieved great loss and began the long journey of healing right along with AJ and her family…and when I read the last word, I immediately had to download the next book in this series because I had to know more about this unique and amazing family. But before opening the next novel, I had to sit back and digest everything because it was profound and I didn’t want to forget what I had read. It is also hard to find a full length novel that inspires me to read the entire book in one sitting but this book did it for me. It was part love story and part mystery and I couldn’t stop reading until I had all the answers. While reading, I found myself trying to figure it all out. I managed to figure out bits and pieces but even with the trail of breadcrumbs left for me, I was so caught up in the story that I didn’t put the puzzle together in time for the grand reveal and I thoroughly enjoyed the surprise. The mystery, once solved, took me to a place I have never been and wasn’t sure I was ready to go there but I am so very glad that I took the journey.
This book left me with that ever elusive “book hangover” that avid readers long to experience. It now has a place on my “Best Books I’ve Ever Read” so that when I need a cathartic release and an epic story, it will be there for me to enjoy again and again.
So, this is a story about a family in crisis who find their way back to each other when one of the children is caught off guard in a compromising position and one of the parents ends up in the hospital. It's the story of that child, Ainsley Janine (AJ), the youngest of triplets, and of one of her two dads, Gabriel Colthurst. It is really two stories intertwined by virtue of the fact that Gabe's hospital visit precipitates the unraveling of their storylines and the eventual reconciliation between AJ's two dads as well as between her and them. It's certainly an innovative way of telling two stories at once. The writer moves not only between two perspectives -- Gabe's and AJ's -- but also between several time periods, from the late '80s to 2015.
So the last 35% - 40% rewarded my perseverance, but the first 60% - 65% tried my patience severely. And really, that's why I can't push it up to 4 full stars. I applaud the writer for writing outside the box, for her decision to treat the story like a recorded movie with Play, Fast-Forward, and Rewind buttons. But I think that decision cost her in terms of timing -- the pace was almost excruciatingly slow in the beginning -- as well as in terms of clarity. I wondered why I was reading what was supposed to be an MM romance but clearly wasn't. The first two-thirds were about a girl in an abusive relationship and her broken ties with her family, and about a guy who'd had a health scare and wanted to reconnect with his estranged spouse and kids. Together, these issues cost the story its higher rating.
I really enjoyed how the story unfolded through the perspectives of father and daughter as they both shared their experiences of love and heartbreak with each other. I was drawn in right from the beginning and once I started reading, found it hard to put down.
There were moments that pulled on my heartstrings and also some humorous ones. And that twist caught me completely by surprise! I didn't see it coming. All of these elements would have made this a four-star review, but there were just too many grammatical errors that could not be overlooked.
I was repeatedly yanked out of the story to reread parts and figure out what the author intended. If the editing had been better, I would have immediately one-clicked the next book in the series because I'd really love to know what happens in AJ and Mason's story. At the moment, I'm on the fence about continuing.
For now, I'm moving on to other books. I may revisit this series at a later time. That being said, this is the first book that I've read by Claudia Burgoa and I'm certain that it will not be the last.
