Heartbreak was a central theme in Unloved, both Brynn and Cassidy had been dealt more tragedy in their lives than either of them were equipped to deal with. I found the way they each utilized their own heartache to find understanding in the other particularly poignant.
Unloved is told from both Brynn and Cassidy’s POVs. Their voices were distinct, they each had unique speech patterns and word preferences. I am a sucker for dual POV because I love having the insight into each of the character’s thought processes, this book was a perfect example of why having that information was so important. Particularly having Cassidy’s viewpoint, I think if we didn’t have it he might have been a hard character to love.
Brynn, Cassidy, and their relationship drove this story. Of course, there were outside factors that manipulated their journey towards one another, but Unloved is a character-driven novel. Getting to know them and watch the spark of lust, need, and attraction blossom into something solid and lasting, all while fighting the future they knew was coming made my heart both swell and shatter simultaneously. They were a wonderful demonstration of what truly selfless love looks like.
Katy Regnery is an author I read frequently, her books are fun and interesting, but NOTHING I’ve read by her before Unloved comes close to the book I just read. I was completely blown away by the writing in this book. Her prose was sublime, each word, each sentence, building to a crescendo I could have never expected. If this is a sign of the direction her art is taking I will be a faithful worshipper of her words.
This one begins with parallel stories - Brynn has lost her fiance in a mass shooting while he was attending a concert. She has spent 2 years grieving, and is inspired to make a trip to finally say goodbye. Cassidy's story begins when he is a child, moving through the events of his life that led to his present circumstances. On a fateful day, their lives intersect. From there, Cassidy fights to keep Brynn alive and healing. As she heals, she begins to learn about the deeply kind and compassionate man helping her. Both Cassidy and Brynn begin to heal from past hurts, slowly letting love unfurl in their hearts. Cassidy tries so very hard to do what he considers to be the right thing, even though it is breaking his heart into a million pieces. Brynn realizes what the story of Cassidy's life is, and fights desperately to find the keys to set him free from his self-imposed isolation. Will she find what she needs in time? Will Cassidy open up his heart to the truth?
This is really such a beautiful story. It does not have the rushed insta-love feeling, even though the characters fall in love over the course of a month. The story takes its time, revealing the heartbreak, character, and life events that shaped these two people. It is heartbreaking to think of the life Cassidy has had to lead - imposed on him by his grandfather and mother. Although both people made their decisions with the best of intentions, they still neglected to see who Cassidy really was versus who they thought he could be. While the epilogue did tie up some loose ends, I still wonder what Cassidy eventually did for a living. Also, I felt like there should have been a little more to the goodbye for Jem. I really thought that there would be a really beautiful passage about the timing and how he brought them together. And maybe, how Jem rescued one final person (Cassidy) from the mountain, giving both Cassidy and Brynn a new start in love and life. Anyway, I loved this. Enjoy!
Cassidy is hands down one of my most beloved heroes to date. That man made me cry; he mad me smile; he made me swoon; not to mention I have never wanted to hug a character in a book as badly as I did him. My heart broke for Cassidy. Page after page after page my heart was torn apart for this broken sweetheart of a man who deserved so much better than he had been given. Brynn was the absolute perfect woman to come into his life. She suffered a great loss that enabled her to realize the precious gift that she was given when she meets Cassidy. And then that twist at the end ... I was so glad Brynn went with her gut instinct.
Unloved is one of the best books I’ve read and I can’t recommend it enough.
