That’s how I felt about journeying with Charlotte Getz and Stephanie Phillips in Unmapped.
Part memoir, part collection of essays, past comedic script (with elements of strikingly honest dismay, disillusionment, and distress) this is one of the most creative expressions of gospel hope I have ever read. In spite of suffering and stress, Charlotte and Stephanie navigate a course through early marriage and motherhood taking Jesus as their North Star. I will carry their voices, full of humor and hard- won faith, with me for a long time.
As funny and witty as it was, it also would swing beautifully in the other direction and go deep into more "heart" issues. It traveled the spectrum, often touching on some of the darkest and most shameful subjects that we go through when we are wives/moms. The tiredness, the depression, the anxiety, the spouses. I honestly would sigh deeply at certain points because it felt SO relatable in the areas you sometimes feel like nobody would understand. Those thoughts you feel like nobody thinks... I read them in this book and the simple truth that others are going through exactly what you are (with the same up and down emotions) really helped me to believe that I'm not alone.
And ultimately, the way these women brought us back to the gospel and Jesus, and how He relates to our messy human-ness, was just beautiful. This isn't a normal "Christian-ese" book that can sometimes tend to make us feel guilty over all the things we're not doing. This is a book that walks you through human experiences and then tells you how awesome God is for sticking with us, guiding us, and loving us despite the highs and lows of our hearts. It left me feeling more in awe of Him and how He pursues all of us even in our darkness, confusion, and rebellion. What a great reminder.
I hope others can walk the beautiful journey with these two women. If you want to laugh, cry, feel heard, explore deeper heart struggles, and see how Jesus can relate to all this stuff, get this book!!
Neither of us had read a spiritual memoir quite like Stephanie and Charlotte's. Prepare to laugh a lot, maybe see a bit of yourself and understand a bit more about what people when they say "faith in action" or "God carries us through hard times." It's also a really intimate look into motherhood.
It's creative, funny, again very creative never following the same narrative structure twice. I only gave it four because I loved the themes in the last big chapter and wish I'd seen more of those reflections scattered throughout and a little less wine references, but the wine is personal preference. If you're looking to shake up a book club or start a long-distance friend book conversation going: get this book!
