WARNING: THREATS TO YOUR CHILD AHEAD! Losing your child’s heart to the perverse world of a sexual predator is truly every parent’s nightmare. When an $800 cell phone bill revealed a secret relationship between our highachieving, Sunday School teaching 15 year old daughter, Kalyn, and a 46 year old man from our congregation, we were horrified. The aftermath of destruction, as it usually is with sexual abuse, was disastrous. Rebellion, depression, wrong relationships, eating disorders, and selfmutilation suddenly turned home into a war zone. In Kalyn’s mind we, her parents, were her enemies while the sexual perpetrator remained her hero. How could something so bizarre happen in a loving Christian home?

Tough subject, but glad to be informed.

Unmask The Predators was written by Lisa Cherry and her daughter, Kalyn Cherry Walker. It's a story about a traumatized daughter and a traumatized family. Kalyn becomes involved in an illicit relationship that has a profound effect not only on herself, but on those around her.

In the sex-crazed culture of America, there needs to come a return to Jesus Christ and The Word of God. In America today, Lisa tells us 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18. Lisa develops 9 strategies of truth to build a foundationon, beginning with #1: "satan does not exist." Lisa finds hope in the scriptures and resting in God while reading Secrets of the Vine by Bruce Wilkenson, and Reese Howells: Intercessor, by Norman Grubb. She orders Joyce Meyers' Emotional Healing Kit for further healing. Lisa develops a 12-step battle plan beginning with step #1: WALK in Faith and Patience. She lists 26 Keys to Protecting Your Children, and a section on scripture confessions that she has read numerous times outloud.

Lisa's journal tells us her daughter Kalyn has a weakened spiritual immune system but God is telling her "See her as delivered. See her as set free. Treat her as such. Pray the prayer of faith. Ignore symptoms. Walk in wisdom concerning the day to day. Watch My Word performed in your midst. The victory is yours, but the battle is Mine...Declare and decree My Word."

I was recently reminded that fear and faith have somewhat the same foundation: Fear means you expect something bad is going to happen in the future. Faith means you are expecting something good. Sometimes you need encouragement and this book may provide that for many. When the disciples were confronted by a storm after Jesus had shown them it could have been calmed on a previous occasion, they failed to calm it. Nevertheless, they were together as a group, and should have drawn strength from each other. This book may become an additional source of strength for you.

Unmask the Predators is a book that every Christian parent and those that work with children and teens should read. This is not a book to read for pleasure or to read casually. The subject matter is disturbing. It is especially disturbing to see that sexual abuse can happen to a member of a loving family involved in ministry and raising their children carefully.

Unmasking the Predators is a book that will open your eyes to the tactics of sexual predators and the enemy of our souls. It will teach you prevention tactics, warning signs that your child may be a victim, and also biblical strategies to deal with the problem should it arise.

The book was co-written by a mother and daughter, the daughter having been a victim of a family friend and fellow church member. You see the nightmare from both perspectives. The father wrote the epilogue. This review is based on a free ebook provided by the publisher.

When first presented with the opportunity to review "Unmask the Predators", I reluctantly admit I balked. My wife and I live contentedly together in our empty nest, having seen all of our kids off on their adult life voyage. Just the same, I decided to give the book a test drive, and found myself properly warned, educated, shocked and indignant throughout this true-life narrative mingled with information on victim symptoms and healing, battle tactics and strategy aimed not at survival, but victory, and a whole chapter dedicated to "Twenty-six keys for protecting your child from Sexual Predators".

Written primarily by Lisa Cherry (chapters 3-9, 11 and12), with three chapters (1, 2 and 10) by daughter Kalyn and epilogue by husband Doug, "Unmask the Predators" majors in the practical, and certainly something to pass along to my kids with kids; or maybe for that possible squall rising somewhere in my sphere of influence; or, I don't know, maybe just put in my back pocket as a watchman in the body of Christ.

Material Connection: In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising", 16 CFR, Part 255, I disclose complimentary receipt of the ebook "Unmask the Predators" from Destiny Image Publishers, Inc., through the Destiny Image Book Review Program. I was asked to write a positive evaluation, though the opinions I express are always my own.

As a marriage and family counselor, I deal with the aftermath of this kind of abuse that destroys families on a daily basis. I am grateful for the Cherry's strength and courage to share their journey to wholeness. The knowledge found within these pages are vital for preventative measures. It helps you recognize those "red flags" and prompts you to act when your instincts say something is wrong. This is a book that every family, church and family ministry needs to be talking about.

One would think church would be the safest place in the world for our children, but the harsh facts are that predators know that churches are where there are plenty of children. This book reveals the tragedy that can unfold if someone sets their heart to lure a child away from the sanctuary of the family.

God promises that ALL things will work together for the good of them who love Him and are called according to His purposes. The Cherry family story shows the redemptive work of a merciful God!

Bottom line... This book will help us all become better stewards of our children-- in our homes, schools and churches.
