Purchase options and add-ons
In this #1 national bestseller, a journalist who's been attacked by Antifa writes a deeply researched and reported account of the group's history and tactics.
When Andy Ngo was attacked in the streets by Antifa in the summer of 2019, most people assumed it was an isolated incident. But those who'd been following Ngo's reporting in outlets like the New York Post and Quillette knew that the attack was only the latest in a long line of crimes perpetrated by Antifa. In Unmasked, Andy Ngo tells the story of this violent extremist movement from the very beginning. He includes interviews with former followers of the group, people who've been attacked by them, and incorporates stories from his own life. This book contains a trove of documents obtained by the author, published for the first time ever.

I know that democracy, for our species, is an extremely unnatural form of government. It was only through extraordinary circumstances that it thrived in America and in so doing, more people knew a greater level of prosperity and freedom than in any other country at any time in history. Was it a society totally free of injustices? Of course not, but compare its shortcomings to any other country that has existed and you will see that the injustices we inflicted were far less than any other civilization. Like the author, Andy Ngo, I greatly fear this country that I love is dying. Those extraordinary circumstances that produced our democracy are gone and add to it the fact that all countries that reach a high level of prosperity produce a weakened citizenry incapable of enduring hardship, easily led by the spin of demagogues, easily moved by emotion rather than rationality.
Andy Ngo was born in Portland, Oregon. His parents were from Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon they were placed into forced labor and reeducation camps by the communist government. In 1978 they fled to the United States as part of the Vietnamese boat people. Because of this, Ngo is particularly grateful to the freedoms and opportunities that the United States gave to his family and to him. The last five pages of the book, were for me, perhaps even more painful than the remainder of the book. Ngo summarizes Antifa’s threats to democracy and freedom and describes the resulting world.
In the author’s own words. “For those who are vulnerable, antifa is more than appealing. It promises community, protection, and purpose. It is organized like a zealous religious movement through the constant feeding of ideology and propaganda. They believe a communist-anarchist world utopia is possible. There would be no borders, police, prisons, racism, or fascism. All material needs would be met through community mutual aid, not through working in an exploitative capitalist system.
But the world antifa envisions is a literal ‘utopia.’ Translated from the original Greek, ‘utopia’ means ‘no place.’ No society can function as antifa envisions. Their small-scale experiments at creating separatist anarcho-communist communes, have ended in disaster and death. Even when their anti-fascist ideology was instituted at the state level (e.g., in the former East Germany), the result was the creation of a sprawling spy apparatus that monitored the public and private thought of citizens for wrongthink.” …
“For those who are drawn to their siren calls of ‘anti-racism,’ ‘anti-fascism’ and ‘equity,’ look to where their ideas have been put into practice. No one inherits a utopia or civilization. They inherit ash, blood, and feces-strained rubble.”
I particularly liked his no-nonsense reporting of the media cover-up of Antifa’s violence. The sympathetic press and half of the politicians of our nation refuse to acknowledge the role Antifa has clearly played in incidents – all of which are confirmed and footnoted in Ngo’s book. I found it truly amazing that while I was reading it, on The View, Joy Behar said Antifa, “…doesn’t even exist.” Her position on this was so well written about in Ngo’s book, it was almost creepy to hear her words. (God no, I don’t watch The View – but I did see a link to her comment on Facebook.)
Extremists on both sides are horrible – be they right or left. This book focuses on one organization but also does not pull punches with the right wing groups out there. Antifa is a danger because they want to take down the United States and do away with capitalism…period. They believe that the ends justifies the means – so violence is perfectly acceptable to them. They are dangerous– having nearly killed the author of Unmasked at one point in their attacks. Others have died by their actions as well, as you can read about in this book.
My criticism of the book is mostly in the history chapter. I would have expected a little more there, such as the 1920’s anarchist movements and bombings in the US and around the globe. It was covered, but only lightly. I would have liked to have seen more about other radical groups such as the Weather Underground or the Symbionese Liberation Army. Then again, I’m a historian – so that is what I would have liked to have read more about.
What I found probably most disturbing was how politicians had responded to Antifa in terms of dismissing charges against them or cowering to them in other ways. In some ways, I feel they are courting the devil by not taking a stand against the Antifa threat.
I think Unmasked is an important book because it bypasses the mainstream media’s ignoring the Antifa threat or even reporting on it. It is well footnoted and supported. Ngo’s writing style is crisp. I like the structure of the book. I didn’t want to read his origin story first, and he didn’t disappoint – he put me, as the reader, in the thick of the action from the start. I encourage people to pick this book up and read it if you want the inside story of this domestic threat to our nation’s stability.
