Editorial Reviews

2011 release, the fourth album from the Vancouver, Canada-based Garage Rock duo. This is the album to vaporize those who shall not be named, and erase any trace of their existence with a dense cloud of fuzz bomb riffs, tribal rhythms, and hard (legal) drugs. Braving a bombardment of devils, ghosts, mutants, and arseholes, the determination and prowess of drum demolisher Maya Miller and belligerent guitarist/vocalist Becky Black has never been so palpable. Their confidence in the studio and skill as musicians has grown exponentially between records, culminating with an epically fierce explosion of Blues, Punk, and Garage Rock that dwarfs all those before it.

The fact that The Pack A.D. don't have more traction with the media borders on the criminal. Sadly, I think that it is a Canadian thing - if they were based on the East or West coast in the US, they would have had a larger footprint.

I stumbled onto one of their songs from their second album ('Funeral Mixtape')on the show 'Being Human' (The US version). From that I got sucked into their first two albums, and was well rewarded. Their earlier material was a nice, blues-and-grunge breath of fresh air.

'Unpersons' is The Pack A.D.'s 4th album, and is even better. They retain their rocking-grunge-punk-blues sensibilities, but mix in more complex moods and post-punk instrumentation. Think Johnny Cash-meets-Frank Black-meets-Patti Smith, but even that is a grossly facile description. Any comparison will come up short - The Pack A.D. REALLY have a unique sound, one that has been improving over the course of their body of work.

The short version of this review - 'Unpersons' is their fourth album, and their best yet. GREAT stuff - buy it!

This is the rare album you listen to in its entirety. Dirty riffs, haunting melodies and simple grooves keep me coming back to this. Emotional but not overwrought. There is something familiar yet fresh that keeps repeated listens interesting.

I'm surprised that not a lot of people know this band. The way that Black fiercely strums the guitar and how Miller bashes the drums make for an intense listening experience. I'm fairly new at garage rock, starting way back with The White Stripes and The Black Key but I can say that these to lovely ladies deserve much more credit. This album perfectly captures the mere definition of rock. Once this album has hooked you, it won't let go until the end. That is the power of The Pack.

Upon my first listen to this album, I was hooked. Great songs! Becky and Maya rock! Nothing in the sound is missing, in my opinion, for a two piece band. Great beats, great guitar, and great singing. I definitely recommend.
