Richard Holbrooke, who died in December 2010, was a pivotal player in U.S. diplomacy for more than forty years. Most recently special envoy for Iraq and Afghanistan under President Obama, Holbrooke also served as assistant secretary of state for both Asia and Europe, and as ambassador to both Germany and the United Nations. He had a key role in brokering a peace agreement among warring factions in Bosnia that led to the Dayton Peace Accords in 1995.

Widely regarded to possess one of the most penetrating minds of any modern diplomat of any nation, Holbrooke was also well known for his outsized personality, and his capacity to charm and offend in equally colossal measures. An intriguing and personal account of the man behind the scenes at some of the most pivotal foreign policy junctures of the past few decades. Too often it's only the guys at the helm that get their story told, but here you have the detailed report of a diplomat that was involved in crucial decisions and shaped a powerful ideology even while never rising to the position that the book suggest he sought, that of Secretary of State.

As a young person considering a career in government, I gleaned from this collection a great deal of hope for and insight about the way our megalithic foreign affairs apparatus functions (or doesn't) and the individuals--Holbrooke's Great Men and Women--who can tilt it slightly to function for the good.

Holmbroke was a skilled diplomatic and a wonderful human being, with faults in both areas, but still a stunning man. His career was impressive, both in government and outside, but somewhat disappointing in that he didn't get Secretary of State of Deputy Secretary of State. The collection of essays helped to show the reader how loved and respected he was across the spectrum of disciplines. He will be (and should be) missed by his friends, family, coworkers, fans, foes, and everybody in between.

Sometimes the informal writing style jarred, but it also made the excursions into the less appealing sides of the subject's life more approachable. There were years when I would have like to have known more, and a greater insight into money-making in the '80s, but overall it was a gripping read. The opening sections in Vietnam were particularly good.
