“The Unquiet Grave” reveals a range of styles: Child Ballads, country, blues.
“The Unquiet Grave” is a Child Ballad about a sweetheart lost to death, and her lover who tends her grave for a year.
“He Was a Friend of Mine” is a traditional folksong lamenting the loss of a friend.
“All Night Long” is my adaptation of a song by the early country group Burnett and Rutherford.
“The Baffled Suitor” is a Child Ballad about a young man who finds a young woman bathing in a stream.
“It Doesn’t Matter Baby” is my adaptation of a Blind Boy Fuller song.
“Old Time Blues” is a song I learned from a 1936 recording by blues artist Carl Martin.
“Butcher’s Boy” is a Child Ballad about a woman who dies for love.
“Black Dog Blues” may first have been recorded in 1927 by blues artist Dick Justice. What was originally ragtime blues now sounds more like bluegrass. But you can hear its ragtime origins.
