4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 596 ratings

FROM THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JEWELED FIRE

In the latest novel in Sharon Shinn’s Elemental Blessings series, a woman is confronted with the past she left behind—and an uncertain future...

Leah Frothen has returned home to rebuild the life she’s avoided for years. But she can scarcely catch her breath before she is summoned to meet with the regent, Darien Serlast, the man who made her a spy. Leah is reluctant to take on a new assignment, but Darien has dangled the perfect lure to draw her in...

Leah finds she enjoys the challenges of opening a shop catering to foreign visitors, especially since it affords her the opportunity to get to know Mally, the child she abandoned five years ago. Leah is simultaneously thrilled, terrified, hopeful, moved, and almost undone as she slowly attempts to become part of her daughter’s life.

But when the regent asks her to spy on ambassadors from a visiting nation, she develops a dangerous friendship with a foreign woman and finds herself falling in love with a man from her past. Soon Leah learns that everyone—her regent, her lover, and even her daughter—have secrets that could save the nation, but might very well break her heart.

I've read this book many times (I will admit, I've read most of Sharon Shinn's books multiple times). It's one of my comfort books (as is Troubled Waters). I particularly like this one for its non-cheesy ending. So many books with interesting plot lines stumble to a halt like the author couldn't figure out how to end them. This one is just beautiful.

The plot of the book fits perfectly with the book before it in the series and leads into the one after, while being a great stand-alone read. It's cast with interesting, fleshed-out characters who have depths and motives and their own pasts. And you get the feeling that the universe is continuing to happen while we're looking at this little slice, and that the things happening off-camera are impacting those we can see. And it's set in one of my favourite universes, with lots of lush and textured descriptions, but also a well-thought-out belief system. I love the Welchin blessings but I also like that Malinqua duality and the extremes of the Karkades were unique and have a sense of internal logic to them.

which applies to Sharon Shinn books in general, to this one in particular, and to the culture of Welce. All have a deeply rooted groundedness to them and it's refreshing, given a diet of so much in life and literature that is volatile, unbalanced and often wildly neurotic. Reading Shinn is like spending time at a really good spa or meditation center. Her books are nor going to wring you dry or send your heart galloping, but they do invoke a range of emotions and leave you wishing you could live in Welce, meet the Primes, go to a temple to draw your blessings and visit the Plaza of Women. They leave you homesick and centered in the best parts of yourself.

This book does all of that. I gave it four stars instead of five only because it's a bit safe, it doesn't pierce quite deeply enough. Maybe that's because the danger gets resolved a bit easily or because people live who were expected to die, so there's a sense of tragedy being cheated somehow? At any rate, this series isn't emotionally as strong or complex as Shinn's Nine Houses series, but it has a lot of peace, homegrown charm and steadfastness to offer a reader who appreciates those qualities.

Caution: until this book, I'd have said this series would be appropriate for a young teenager to read (though perfectly enjoyable for adults). There are scenes of not very explicit lovemaking in this story, however, so if you're looking for books for someone teenaged or younger, this particular entry in the series may not be suitable.

I am not an unbiased reader of the Elemental Blessings Novels - I have all of them and I've re-read them too many times to count. This latest addition does what any really good series book should do - it expands the world, adds new, interesting characters, enhances one's knowledge of previous characters, and invents new situations. Darien, Zoe, Josetta, Rafe, Nelson, Taro, Annova, Rhan, Jaker, and Barlow, all have roles in this adventure, but the main character is Leah Frothen (who was a viewpoint character in "Jeweled Fire'); the story line covers her return to Welce to connect with the daughter, Mally, she left behind and to begin a new life. Several secondary characters from the previous books also have more important roles here, one of which, Chandran, assumes an heroic part in the story. As in all her books, Shinn includes problematic issues; prior books dealt with pedophilia, autism, sexual orientation, etc., in 'Unquiet Land', that issue is the moral philosophy of Karkans - people from Karkades who believe they can atone for any horrific act with an act of equal (in their eyes) beneficence. It is a frightening idea, and forms the background for a new problem for Darien (still not crowned) who is also trying to juggle multiple possible alliances with the different countries surrounding Welce (many of which were featured in prior books, e.g. Coziquela & Soeche Tas, etc.). Leah finds herself in the middle of both problems while she is trying to find herself and to find a way to be a mother to a daughter who does not know who she is. Leah is a strong protagonist and her struggles are realistic; she is no helpless heroine, but she isn't an unstoppable force, either - I liked her. Although the book could be read alone, any new reader would miss out on all the background of most of the other characters in the book, and cheat themselves out of the pleasure of reading 3 other excellent books - I recommend reading them in order, starting with 'Troubled Waters, then 'Royal Heirs' through 'Jeweled Fire'. As in the first book, 'Troubled Waters', the role the Primes play in Welce is an important aspect, but here, Shinn explains in more depth, how these budding powers are discovered and used. I cannot wait for the next book in this series (there are five categories of elemental blessings), but I am also not happy with the idea that that might be the last in the series. Welce is a land peopled with characters I would like to visit and re-visit ad infinitum.

When I read the first three books of the “Elemental Blessing Novel Series”, I learned how history, fate, and honor can yield individual justice. The fourth book did much more. It gives me hope that true evil can be vanquished, that good leaders are possible, and larger scale justice can be achieved. Sharon Shinn is a great story teller. She keeps her cards close to the vest and releases the secrets a little at a time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leah's shop of amazing things
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2022
Fourth and final volume in the 'Elemental Blessings' series of fantasy novels. Those began with 'Troubled Waters'. This is not a jumping on point, so new readers should start with that. Those who have read all the other three books, read on.

This one runs three hundred and eighty six pages. It has twenty eight chapters. It does bring the story of the whole series to a close.

This time, the viewpoint character is Leah. She has come back home after spying for Darien overseas. Now he wants her to open a shop. So she can do similar for him. She is also reunited with her daughter. Who she gave up years before. Can she make a new life for herself? Meantime, there are troubling things going in the city....

One of those books where it takes a fair while for plot to kick in, but it does hold you with the writing anyhow. because it's a pleasant bit of reading. Comfort reading. Like comfort foods or favourite film or tv show or pair of slippers. The world of the story is quite rich in the little details.

It doe keep some plot bubbling away in the background for a fair while, and then character relationships develop. Although some of the romance here is a bit predictable, and there are a couple of adult moments, it does handle other aspects of love a little differently, and that was rather well done.

It is also exceptionally well plotted. There were moments when things set up earlier, in the book or in the series, came into play and became important, and they really left me amazed at how well the writing had done that. It's very good indeed at this.

The ending is a good one as well. For the book and the series as a whole.

But as with others in this series it is a four rather than a five star read. It just isn't quite the most amazing setting or story or character drama. But it is still very good at those four aspects.

Even a good rather than a great bit of writing can keep you happy though, which is why this is a good series from a very good writer.

Interesting setting, odd magics, lots of intrigues and skulduggery...fairly predictable plot, and an annoying "heroine", who makes the most irrational and naive choices...one wants to yell at her:"he is right behind you!", but she just keeps on being silly...oh well, of course it all works out, sweetly, in the end...what else would one expect?...not the best in the series...a bit tired, a bit silly and too obvious...oh well...
