The child who received so little real attention as she watched her mother spiral from mania to depression was a very good observer and did some excellent research to fill in the blanks about her enigmatic mother. However, I am very surprised that the only word about mental illness is a therapist's mention that Anne Ford was a "schizophrenogenic" - someone who causes those around her to go "crazy". People do not make other people crazy. This woman, Anne Ford, had every symptom of bi-polar disorder with alcohol self-medication. Along the way she shows signs of megalomania, psychosis, and other disorders which accompany serious bi-polar illness. She was also smart and talented, and charming enough to keep herself surrounded by interested people at least when she was young. Only a person with mental illness would ignore her children so completely, and leave them to raise each other and watch out for her. But the memoir makes no mention of this obvoius explanation for why these children were so ignored, why their mother drank and had no boundaries, and why her obvious talent could not sustain her. It was an era where people were still blamed for their mental illesses, and it was assumed that they could overcome them with sheer willpower. That era is long over yet this book does not aknowledge that new understanding can explain Anne, and can relieve those around her of their guilt for not being able to "fix" her.

This is a riveting story of the demise of a once-beautiful model and designer. It's written by her daughter who survived a neglectful upbringing at the hands of her mother, but comes to grip with it all after many years. It's not a happy story but it is extremely interesting. I recommend it highly. I had a hard time putting it down.

I finally finished it, which was a struggle. While I have no reason to doubt the author's overall experience, She certainly had a damaged childhood. I do doubt her detailed descriptive memories - who wore what, her mother's design fabrics, furniture, neighbors, etc., especially asa six or seven year old. Was all this necessary as she tells the story? Too much and repetitive. For all the tragedy, she ends up the same as her mother blaming her father and her mother's parents. The chapters that were the best for me were the historical background of her ancestry, simple and well told. At the time, I kindled this book, I also bought Henry and Rachel, a novel based on some facts and geographical research.

I loved this book, I couldn't put it down. It is a beautifully written, honest and emotional memoir which touched me in many ways. This is a story about survival amidst chaos and a young woman's journey to find insight and understanding. It is told with compassion and what I loved most about this book was that the writer searched to understand the mother who failed her in so many ways. The writer also shows how it is possible to survive and even thrive despite the most difficult of circumstances. This is a writer who I hope to hear more from, she is a wonderful talent and an example of the power of the human spirit.

The only thing I would say is that it went into too much detail about what people looked like and how a street looked or how a person looked, I just didn't need that much detail. And one other thing is that the ending just left me hanging, I was thinking to myself that's it. But other than that I liked the story and I could almost identify with Anne having been rasied not feeling like I was wanted, like I was to be seen but not heard. It was an okay book and that's why I could only give it 3 stars. : (

Good read. Sad, but shows the strength of the human spirit.

The author ponders the eternal question, why some children's seemingly unhealthy childhoods result in their future successful lives. The author is all but ignored if not out right abused by her mom. There's really no conclusion as to why she not only survived this life style but managed to get herself educated, married and happy. I would have liked to read more about her siblings but I suppose that's not her story to write.

Having already read Henry and Rachael also by Laurel Saville, which I loved I then had to read this one. Even though the story was completely different I loved it. An amazing family story with connections to Henry and Rachel. Classic story which points out that even though you may have the world at your feet, you still need to do the right things!! Life can certainly go wrong!! Couldn't put it down

Did you read _Henry and Rachel_ by Laurel Saville? They are the author's great grandparents. _Unraveling Anne_ is a continuation of the family history, this time focusing on Anne, the author's mother. As with the previous book, there are some slow and uninteresting details, but overall, this is an entertaining read.
