Now we've got the next fine installment of the franchise. It's already been out for several years, so a new review might seem odd, but I had only played the PS3 port until now
*(rabbit trail: that was new, having an Unreal game release on consoles... it was a very different experience from playing the last one on the PC, and at first quite a bit harder to pilot, but this enormous discrepancy in control style was mediated somewhat by the PS3's ability within the game to accommodate a mouse and keyboard.)*
Nothing much has changed since 2004, except for some tweaks of the game modes and some added vehicles, but it has undergone a small graphics overhaul, with some DirectX 10 support and a heavy dose of atmospheric post-processing, which lends the game a darker style than its predecessor. Light and shadow are used to great effect in UT3, but it remains well optimized and animations are precise and responsive - the result being that even with the pretty turned up it will still run at a handful over 60 FPS on a well-performing gaming system.
A few notes for anyone who doesn't already know:
Yes, the game modes have changed, but they've kept the best parts. Onslaught, a personal favorite from the last game, has been replaced by Warfare, which is at first blush a strikingly dumbed-down take on the same thing, but the new intel doesn't make for a slower game. What it does do well is it helps keep everyone in the match on the same page. Cons: whether you have a headset or not, you and your team can easily get through a match in Warfare without ever opening your mouth, but if it can keep a game full of noobs shooting in the right direction... take it as you will.
It's just as easy to add mods to this game as it was in 2004 - just a little bit more involved if you want to bring your best to the table. I've got no personal experience here, yet, but I'd assume deeper texture and shader support, as well as new rigging mechanics, all translate into more stuff to learn for the modding beginner.
Yes, it's still fun. The campaign is lacking (some may say just as lacking as the Tournament campaign always has been), but the multiplayer action seems more delightfully frenetic than before. Voice taunts are still going strong, and the list of actors is so darn good - TC Carson's in there.
Basically, if you're a fan of the series, or old-school multiplayer FPS games in general, this is good for you. Take it.
