Unreal Tournament III is hands down one of best, if not the best First Person Shooter out there. The game play is smooth, the game engine for this product can produce a gritty real world effect that earlier versions couldn't quite support but you need the hardware to run it. That is less of a problem these days but I would guess you can still buy a computer that can't play this game. I prefer the warfare mode as it requires strategy. I also have played earlier versions of Unreal Tournament and one addition in this version is the floating surf ride that speeds up movement of non-vehicle players. This gets you back into the action much faster than the earlier Unreal Tournament versions. I play this quite a bit but still play the earlier versions too as some maps that I loved did not make the transition from one version to another.

I bought this game after having played Unreal Tournament 2004 in the past and loving it. Unreal is the kind of FPS that I like, you run around and blow stuff up and shoot CPUs. It's great. What I consider a game you don't have to think about while playing. If you want a game where you can have some mindless fun, this is it. I love this game. If you're familiar with Unreal, this game doesn't disappoint. It's just like the others. It seems a bit smoother and faster than 2004, though it might just be my system. Either way, it's a good buy.

I bought this game and after reinstalling three times the game would NOT launch. I have yet to return it though.

I was first introduced to Unreal Tournament shortly before UT2004 hit the shelves, and when it did, it did no wrong. So fascinated I was with not only the gameplay, but also the modding opportunities, that I spent months designing my own user-generated content (I haven't completely thrown in the towel there, by the way, but at the time I was working with an Athlon 1 at 1.1GHz with 756Mb, and teaching myself 3D modeling on a machine without a dedicated video card was hard, time-consuming work ;P ).

Now we've got the next fine installment of the franchise. It's already been out for several years, so a new review might seem odd, but I had only played the PS3 port until now
*(rabbit trail: that was new, having an Unreal game release on consoles... it was a very different experience from playing the last one on the PC, and at first quite a bit harder to pilot, but this enormous discrepancy in control style was mediated somewhat by the PS3's ability within the game to accommodate a mouse and keyboard.)*
Nothing much has changed since 2004, except for some tweaks of the game modes and some added vehicles, but it has undergone a small graphics overhaul, with some DirectX 10 support and a heavy dose of atmospheric post-processing, which lends the game a darker style than its predecessor. Light and shadow are used to great effect in UT3, but it remains well optimized and animations are precise and responsive - the result being that even with the pretty turned up it will still run at a handful over 60 FPS on a well-performing gaming system.

A few notes for anyone who doesn't already know:

Yes, the game modes have changed, but they've kept the best parts. Onslaught, a personal favorite from the last game, has been replaced by Warfare, which is at first blush a strikingly dumbed-down take on the same thing, but the new intel doesn't make for a slower game. What it does do well is it helps keep everyone in the match on the same page. Cons: whether you have a headset or not, you and your team can easily get through a match in Warfare without ever opening your mouth, but if it can keep a game full of noobs shooting in the right direction... take it as you will.

It's just as easy to add mods to this game as it was in 2004 - just a little bit more involved if you want to bring your best to the table. I've got no personal experience here, yet, but I'd assume deeper texture and shader support, as well as new rigging mechanics, all translate into more stuff to learn for the modding beginner.

Yes, it's still fun. The campaign is lacking (some may say just as lacking as the Tournament campaign always has been), but the multiplayer action seems more delightfully frenetic than before. Voice taunts are still going strong, and the list of actors is so darn good - TC Carson's in there.

Basically, if you're a fan of the series, or old-school multiplayer FPS games in general, this is good for you. Take it.

My kids wanted to relive the UTIII experience of years past so I picked up a few new copies since my originals disappeared. There were no problems with the install at all and it was a very good value. It was tons of fun to hear "head shot" again :-) The sound and graphics are so much better than UT2004. Upgrading my Core 2 duo to a Haswell Core I5 w/GTX 770 drastically improved 1920 gaming with most detail set to high. That made playing UT3 even more fun!

the story mode campaign is the exact same thing as the multiplayer arena except with dialogue. Does have nice graphics though. So if you're looking for a JUST multiplayer deathmatch kind of game then give this a look.

Good shooting mechanics, but the story based approach to offline play makes it less desirable than previous titles. Visuals are very nice but probably a bit dowdy compared to more recent shooters (this game was made in 2007). LAN play can be unreliable and running your own headless dedicated server is nigh-impossible (seemingly overly complex). Online connections is not exactly required, but everything wants to revolve around Epic's Master UT servers. The online community is moderately active, but perhaps not as much so as (still) for prior titles (specifically UT 2004 and some super dedicated original UT players). But all this can be overlooked. The only real downfall is that level design was decent but not up to the standards of prior titles. You will probably get a decent time out of modding it, though. Good buy if you want a cheap shooter and have a few dollars to burn.

This is my 3rd copy of this game, yes it is that fun! This particular copy I sent to a gaming friend that needed a copy and I was able to help him out. Even though UT3 has been out for years you can still find many faithful fans online playing it. Unreal Tournament 3 is my go to game when I'm done with all my single player games. You can also play in single player mode but this is one of the few games I prefer playing online with others.
