THIS book has become my top read for 2015...not kidding at all... it gutted me, made me cry more than once but overall just left me feeling warm, tingly all over and longing for the good old days when I lived in a small town surrounded by family and friends and warmth.
Jack is a man who loves deeply but not always in the way you might see on the outside...boyish, headstrong and living with mistakes he made as a teenager but somehow he doesn't regret because he has Claudia now.
Claudia, the hard-to-read young woman who aspires to be so much more than the small town she grew up in or the working class, blue collar men she calls family (her uncles Rocco and Getty)...she is as smart and cautious as she is beautiful.
Easton and Anya...a brother and sister who will break your heart with their stories, make you hate them and then fall so head over heels in love with them, that you will be absolutely gutted at their fate in this book.
I like to think of this novel as the "land of broken dreams" and "love lost, love found" as so many life changes befall these wonderful people in their quest to find happiness and fulfill their goals.
To say that Cora Brent can write family drama and angsty relationships is an understatement. I first read her biker books (because that genre is one of my favorites) and then moved on to her bad-boy romances...but this epic family saga is so deeply moving and spans lifetimes of all of these colorful characters, that I was left overwhelmed with emotions.
I don't want to leak too many spoilers but have to say that Unruly deals with heartbreak, death and disease that spans generations; broken dreams of a sports career, lost in the limelight and fame; teenage pregnancy and the long-lasting consequences (both horrible and wonderful); sexuality and an intense relationship that although it is not really taboo, could be considered inappropriate; and the overall message that the human spirit is way stronger than you know. Life can and will go on, even in the face of unspeakable tragedy there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow...especially when you have someone to love and cherish.
If you read one down to earth family drama this year...this should be on your list. Romantic, sexy (OMG some of the foreplay takes place over long periods of time leaving you breathless when the deed is finally done), passionate and full of real people who will stay with you long after the book is finished. Absolutely wonderful book and one of the best Mother's Day presents I received this year.
***** 5+ ***** "life always throws you a curveball" stars
This is one of those books that truly took me by surprise. Hot guy on the cover, synopsis that just screamed “ALPHA MALE!”, and years of sexual tension? Yes, please! And while Unruly delivers all of those elements as promised, Brent also delivers not one, but two love stories, bringing two generations of a family together. Not only do we witness a young woman falling in love, we witness a father learning to love his daughter in a way neither thought possible. The story is as heart breaking as it is life-affirming, and if you’re looking for romance with a little more substance, give this one a try you won’t be disappointed.
