Once again Ms. Harper's nuanced storytelling explores the nature of her wolves, the bonds they forge, and the politics of being out, both as gay and as a "human wolf". This time she brings us two new werewolves: a gay man who had no idea he was a wolf, and a submissive werewolf who finds himself in the unfamiliar and uncomfortable position of being responsible for the safety of another. It's a great combo.
While I personally didn't find the book's main characters quite as interesting as the couples in the last two books, they're still a sweet, fresh, interesting pair. Perhaps the characters aren't as deeply developed here because she had to make a trade off -- compared to the previous three books, this one takes place on a larger stage with more action and a greater cast of both humans and wolves, which is a lot of fun. And, don't worry, we do get to spend some quality time with the members of our favorite wolfpack.
Ms. Harper's prose is as elegant, smooth, and enjoyable as ever. She is definitely one of the more skilled writers in the m/m genre.
At the end of book 3, I wondered if there would be a 4th book, one that could take that next step, or if she would consider the series closed. I'm so glad she took us past that horizon and continued on. I can't recommend this series enough.
Harper has done a great job of tying all of the previous characters and plot of the series into this book while introducing some wonderful new guys. Alex and Dylan are two guys whose worlds are tilted, with each of them thrust into strange situations. Alex, finally coming out of a very deep closet for the first time in his 38 years, and Dylan, coming to terms with his werewolf heritage. Their reactions to these strange new lives are absolutely believable (there were times when I nodded and thought, "Yeah, that's about how I would react to that."). I especially got a kick out of Dylan's response to the ingrained pack hierarchy; it's one thing for Paul to push back, but another wolf doing that?
I hadn't intended to, but I devoured this book in a single day. For me, that is the sign of a book that I really enjoyed. Now I'm now sad that there isn't another one...yet!
