Three short stories, quickly read, can still hold a punch--especially when Russell Brooks has written them. At least two of the stories carry through and give readers further background to bridge between Pandora's Succession and his latest The Demeter Code,

It is very clear that Ridley Fox will do anything and everything to defeat all those who were involved in killing his fiancee... He's gone uncover in this story, as a man, Curtis White, who is selling secret documents Monique works for the Arms of Are and she has a back-up sniper scheduled to take White out as soon as she pretends to send his payment electronically to his account. So, finished with their meal, she heads for the restroom, but instead goes out the door to head home... Hearing a shot before she gets to her car...

But readers who have already read the first book, know that Ridley Fox may go down once in a while, but he always finishes what he starts... Monique finds that out in a surprising and very cool ending when she meets the man with whom she really had dinner...

Ok, first off, the next story, To the Last Bite, is a bit creepy... And I wasn't quite sure whether Ridley was actually one of the characters... he does have a need for revenge so readers will be able to figure out which man could be Ridley... LOL...

Dennis Kirby is a food critic--you know, a reviewer of the food at restaurants. Kirby was a long-time newspaper writer and was well-known and believed by his readers. In fact, a bad review often resulted in the restaurant closing...and most of Kirby reviews were bad...

But he had just finished an excellent meal at a new French restaurant and was thrilled to be able to write a good review in a very long time.

Three short stories combined into one quick read makes this trilogy best served cold. All puns aside, these short stories provide the reader an introduction to the writing profile of Russell Brooks, albeit a darker side of him. Readers have generally compared his works to Robert Ludlum in many regards, especially in the genres of suspense and thriller. There is no doubt about it - Brooks has a fan base and knows how to keep them pleased. Brooks asked me to take a read at his newest book, The Demeter Code, after whetting my feet with this brief concoction.

Each tale therein focuses in on a different tale with a different cast - all revolving around the impending act of revenge. As far as giving away spoilers, that is as much as I can provide. What I can share with you is that even though some of the tales were a bit dark for my taste, Brooks did an excellent job spinning the web of revenge in each tale. An earlier work of his, this book feels more introductory to a growing craft for Brooks, and shows only promise for future creative works that he will no doubt deliver in a crowd-pleasing manner.

I give this book four stars - while it is definitely enthralling, this book feels more like a novice encounter with writing, allowing the reader to wander too much into details that ultimately have no impact in the end, which very well could have book Brooks' original intent, as an act of suspense, to let the reader feel unknowing about where the tale intends to go.

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book comes with a disclaimer of its own, and I have to say I definitely second, third, and fourth it to all future readers! All three stories are fantastic, and I'm already a fan of Ridley Fox, so I was happy to see him appear once again. "To The Last Bite" was certainly my favorite of the three (and I'm sure that doesn't bode well for my psyche), although I'm going to be quite wary of my remarks regarding a restaurant's cuisine ever again!!!

I wholeheartedly recommend this collection, especially to those who are already fans of Russell Brooks. Just make sure you're not planning to eat any time soon after reading...

Bon appetit!

5 stars =)

*A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review

It took well under an hour to read all three as the whole set is about sixty pages long, but it was well worth the effort, The stories are each different and your attention will be held to the end.
When you have finished you will know a little more about Ridley Fox, and will definitely not want to get on the wrong side of him.

Review
Plot/Story:

In this book there are three very short stories. It had a hint of the style I liked in Brook’s first book, but other than that these short stories didn’t click well with me and if I could I would give it 1 star. I am truly sorry.

Crème Brûlée
The first story was too tacky and predictable.

To the Last Bite
The second story had a hint of surprise in it and just because of it. I think it was better than the rest.

Shashlyk and Morezhenoe
The third story was my least favorite of all three, even with the return of the Fox from the first book.
Cover Art:

Is very plain and didn’t match the stories inside the book at all, but I would say that the cover over Goodreads is beautiful and fits nicely with the vibes of this book.
Blurb:

I like the blurb as it was vague enough and has a nice hint of what to come in the book.
Other Stuff

Opening Line: “So what do you have for me?” Monique Beauvais said to Curtis White, speaking with a French-Canadian accent.
Highlights: I liked the somewhat surprise in the second story. I thought of something similar, but not quite

Lowlights: I thought the short stories were too tacky and I didn’t like the writing style here at all.

Final Thoughts: If you read the first book of Brooks, I would say skip this one as it has no importance to the first book’s plot. Even though I didn’t like much these short stories, I am still looking forward reading his third book in this series.
