From Booklist

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent Will Trent is undercover in Macon, hoping to finally corner elusive criminal mastermind Big Whitey. The notorious high-level drug dealer uses the same blueprint in every town he moves in on, infiltrating the local drug scene, injecting plenty of cash, and retaining a retinue of first-rate lawyers. The result? A bunch of low-level thugs are turned into businessmen, and crime goes up while prosecutions go down. Will crosses paths with Detective Lena Adams, whom he had previously investigated for reckless conduct and who has just endured a brutal raid on a dealer’s house that saw multiple gunshot victims on both sides of the law. Meanwhile, Will’s relationship with Sara Linton deepens, although he must face his own intimacy issues, which are the result of years of abuse suffered while in foster care. Slaughter plunges readers into the action from the get-go with her electrifying ability to write suspenseful, riveting confrontations between cops and criminals, all while deepening the backstories of her longtime series leads. Another intense read, on multiple levels, from the ever-reliable Slaughter. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The eighth entry in Karin Slaughter’s best-selling Will Trent series is backed up by a national advertising campaign, including a tie-in to Save the Libraries events. --Joanne Wilkinson

Review

“Slaughter’s most powerful book to date . . . No one writes like Slaughter. . . . Her words fairly growl on paper but yet her descriptions of relationships are tear inducing. This may make her an anomaly but she is the best damn anomaly writing books today. Make sure you read Unseen.”—The Huffington Post

“Compelling . . . [Slaughter] balances a complex plot with believable twists while sensitively exploring her realistic characters’ emotions and problems.”—South Florida Sun-Sentinel

“An emotional roller coaster ride . . . fast-paced and edge-of-your seat . . . Slaughter is brilliant.”—Wichita Falls Times Record News

Superb and emotionally wrenching . . . The despicable nature of the crimes being investigated only serves to enhance Will’s innate goodness and humanity. Current series fans will be delighted, and newcomers to Slaughter’s work will find a new obsession.”Library Journal

“Tense and densely plotted . . . The twisted plot and shocking reveals remind readers why Slaughter remains a dominant voice in crime fiction.”Publishers Weekly

I think I've probably read all of Karin Slaughter's Grant County and Will Trent novels, and I felt that Unseen was yet another example of Slaughter's uncanny ability to create true breath taking suspense and combine it with characters that are as unique and as vivid as any you will find in fiction. I find myself getting tired of most series as the characters grow stale, plot lines become repetitive and dialogue starts sounding tired, but these characters are consistently growing, changing and heading off in new directions. I don't always like these people, but I always find them interesting. The author's perceptive insights into motivations and her crystal clear view of the underside of society make this a series I will keep coming back to as the author continues to deliver time and again.

My one problem with this novel was in the plot structure, as a portion of the story was told in flashback. I did not find this enjoyable, however it is most likely a testament to how invested I was in the book that flashing back led me to fits of screaming frustration. The author takes you to the very edge and then makes you wait for it. The suspense is maddening and enjoyable and frustratingly real.

So much of this story centers on Lena Adams, something I initially did not appreciate. I have never enjoyed this character, who seems to spend so much time wrapped up in her own head that reading about her can sometimes begin to feel claustrophobic. Once again, however, the author surprised me by taking this character to a place I never expected. Unseen is a must read for any fan of the Will Trent series. If you are new to the works of Karin Slaughter, you are in for a treat. You have just found your new favorite author.

I love mysteries and read every one I can put my hands on. I've read most of Karin Slaughters books and enjoyed them. The twists and turns in this story kept me on my toes. Couldn't believe who the culprit was but really in this day and age I should have known. Money is more important than honor.
I liked Lena Adams in this story although she comes accross as a tough cookie, I suppose to be a top notch detective you have to be, but she seemed more human to me in this book.
I've always liked Dr. Linton but sometimes I have to agree that she's a little to perfect. She couldn't have fallen in love with a nicer guy than Will Trent but he comes with so much baggage. He is still married to his wife Angie who honestly is a nut case. I hope there are more stories in the making with them in it. I think you will like this book as Will goes under cover. There's action plus. Stretch out on the hammock with a glass of iced tea and enjoy.

Karin Slaughter has done it again. A masterful plot filled with complex and fascinating characters. The main characters are those introduced in previous novels yet this novel can stand alone if you have not read the earlier books. From the very first page until the last I was riveted to the book, hating to put it down when everyday events intervened. Will Trent has never found it easy to open up to anyone and then he and Sarah, another wounded soul, find they can create a relationship which is growing stronger each day. When Will has to go undercover the very fabric of that relationship is stretched to the breaking point as the lies continue to mount. And then Lena, the woman who Sarah believes lured her first husband to his death enters with all of her baggage and inherent poor judgment. Add to that the toxic mix of drugs, good cops, bad cops, and someone who is willing to kill anyone who gets in his way of making big money on bad drugs, and you have a storyline that keeps you glued to each page. Highly recommend this book and those she has written previously featuring these characters. A great read.

*** WARNING: contains spoilers of the 'Grant County' series and previous 'Will Trent' books ***

The past is never quite done with Sara Linton. This much is true when she gets a frantic phone-call from Darnell "Nell" Long; high school girlfriend to Sara's five-years dead husband, and mother to Jeffrey Tolliver's estranged son, Jared. Nell has called Sara for solace and outrage - Jared has been shot in a home invasion, and is now fighting for his life. Nell believes his wife, Lena Adams, is somehow responsible and Sara's first inclination is to agree.

Lena was Jeffrey's partner on the Grant police force - big brother to her reckless little sister. And it was her recklessness that got Jeffrey killed in the end, of this Sara has no doubt - she also knows that Lena's self-preservation and selfishness has stopped her from ever taking that full blame. Jared is a patrolman, but Lena heads up an elite police taskforce and Sara is certain that the break-in and attempted murder will somehow link back to Lena's job and reckless attitude ...

Georgia Bureau of Investigation officer, Will Trent, also believes Lena Adams is the most likely link between the break-in and a raid she lead, that went bust a few days ago. Will has investigated Lena in the past, over a witness who died in custody - he could make nothing stick then, but he's half convinced that this time Lena's true nature is going to come out.

Will heads down to Macon as part of an undercover operation investigating a mysterious (and possibly phantom) `Big Whitey' ring leader that may lead back to Lena's raid and her husband's near-death. But Will also knows Lena's past with his girlfriend, Sara Linton - and he knows that Sara is heading down to Macon to be by her stepson's side.
