Editorial Reviews

Once in a while I find a new writer who truly speaks to my heart. Although I wish it
were more common, not everyone is able to purposefully seek out a life of WONDER.
And it's even more rare to then write a beautifully articulated book about it. I believe
that wonder, awe, joy, and silliness, are our inherent and natural state, the state we
originally arrive here with. Lori Kane is an author who not only believes this but feels so
passionately about being unabashedly wonder-filled, seeking grace-led humor, and joy-
filled wisdom, being brave enough to seek your own personal legend, your raw,
wonderful life. Lori Kane has written a deeply moving, humorous, elegant treatment of
human emotion and human potential. I highly recommend this book to those who are
or want to be Playful Elders and for those seeking to intentionally live purposefully with
all that life throws at them and survive despite of it and in the end, maybe even feel
like smiling.
~ Sarah Saint-Laurent, Bestselling Author of the Awakening Shakti Series.

From the Author

If you're wondering if this book would make a good gift for someone, here's what I can tell you so far. About 125 members of my community were prereaders or early first readers of this book. Of those people, 123 people either really enjoyed it (4 stars) or absolutely loved it (5 stars). These people were women, men, progressives, conservatives, people of color, white folks, urban, rural, white collar, blue collar, religious, not religious, educators, artists, scientists, spiritual leaders, self-employed, employees within large and small organizations, and retired people. As a whole, they live in all major regions of the U.S. and in more than a dozen countries around the world. They also range in age from 30 to 75. So I feel comfortable suggesting Unshaken Wonder as a gift for most people. My two dear friends who couldn't make it through the book describe themselves as "100% all-in Trump supporters" during a time that's been exceedingly painful for them. They couldn't get past some of the pain that I and others in my community experienced in 2017 and 2018. They also love me enough that they refused to leave reviews on Amazon, fearing that their reviews would interfere with my book sales. Isn't that wonderful? Humans are amazing. So, if you're buying a gift for a friend or family member like these two brave friends of mine, then I suggest skipping this book and cooking them a meal and taking them out dancing or to a movie instead.

Born in South Dakota, Lori Kane, EdD, moved to Seattle as a young adult where she began as an editor, then became a tech writer, instructional designer, and eventually a researcher studying self-organizing groups and a community story wrangler for her communities. She learned to listen so closely that she eventually learned how to listen to trees, and the trees asked her to move her family to an island, so she did.

Today Lori's a Pacific Northwest essayist, poet, author, and coworking and workshop space host. She's an occasional blogger, serious home canner, lazy gardener, Alzheimer's care partner for mom Linda, and a mystery, fantasy, and science fiction enthusiast. She lives on Whidbey Island, Washington, USA alongside the remarkable Salish sea and her equally remarkable people. She runs Silly Dog Studios with husband Daniel, Eva the dog, and Joe, Bella, and Batman the cats beside the chatty trees of Brakenwood forest who suggest that Silly Humans Studios would have been a more apt name for their home and business.

Lori has written eight books of creative nonfiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction/poetry hybrids on the subjects of finding work you love that the world needs, turning empty and underused spaces into community spaces, remembering and being sustained by your artist self, noticing the deep-fierce gifts within caregiving, encountering the unshaken wonder at your core, and recognizing yourself as part of the playful elder community.
