Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Unsilent Night documents the seasonal sound sculpture project of New York City-based composer Phil Kline. A gathering of friends and fans, armed with boomboxes, goes "caroling" through the streets of New York by playing pre-recorded tapes. The results on this CD--partially recorded in the studio, partially in the streets--challenge any notion of "Christmas music." At times, Kline's work seems to consist mainly of minimalist pulses from bells (shades of Steve Reich and Terry Riley). Occasionally, there's a hint of an angelic, wordless choir, a fading reminder that this work is meant for the holidays. Studio mixing turns this collection of field recordings into something more seamless and polished, but you're left only imagining how beautiful this work must be when caught live, with a brigade of boomboxes passing by your stoop. Even on disc, it's a fascinating work. --Jason Verlinde

Let me echo the previous reviews of this beautiful, evocative work! While it's clearly holiday music of the highest quality, it shouldn't be pigeonholed as only that, because it can be enjoyed throughout the year.

How do I describe it?

It feels minimalist, yet it's sumptuous, even lush. It's ambient, yet there's a strong melodic structure to it. It's quite contemporary, yet it feels both ancient & ageless. It shimmers, it chimes, it swells with angelic voices -- but flesh & blood angels!

Luckily, there are samples right here on the Product Page. If you're at all curious, eager to immerse yourself in something gorgeous & transporting, give them a listen. The odds are that you'll be ordering a copy as soon as possible, because it's one of those rare works that's uniformly strong from beginning to end. This one's a keeper!

Conceptual music at its best. If you ever have the opportunity to participate in a Holiday performance of this piece take it! It is an experience you will not forget, listening to this CD brings back some of the magic of that night, but the recording stands very well on its own as well. Highly recommended.

This album was aired in full in a special 2007 Christmas program of "Stars End", the landmark 30-year-old Philadelphia radio show of electronic/space/ambient music. Its gorgeous tapestries of sound inspired by bells, Gregorian chant, and early medieval polyphony were the highlight to me of the entire five hours. I fell in love with it immediately and bought a copy from Amazon. Many subsequent hearings have maintained my delight: it wears well. I plan on making a Christmas gift of it this year for friends. This is a highly imaginative and atmospheric contribution to the genre.
