Unsinkable is the definitive memoir by film legend and Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds.

In Unsinkable, the late great actress, comedienne, singer, and dancer Debbie Reynolds shares the highs and lows of her life as an actress during Hollywood’s Golden Age, anecdotes about her lifelong friendship with Elizabeth Taylor, her experiences as the foremost collector of Hollywood memorabilia, and intimate details of her marriages and family life with her children, Carrie and Todd Fisher.

A story of heartbreak, hope, and survival, “America’s Sweetheart” Debbie Reynolds picks up where she left off in her first memoir, Debbie: My Life, and is illustrated with previously unpublished photos from Reynolds’s personal collection.

Debbie Reynolds died on December 28, 2016, at the age of 84, just one day after the death of her daughter, actress and author Carrie Fisher.

Anyone who has had an encounter with Debbie Reynolds (and to my way of thinking that is probably half of the population of the United States) can tell you one distinct thing....she is a powerhouse of energy that loves her fans and is enthusiastic and just plain nice. I've met her three times. She'll answer questions, talk about the good old days when MGM was still the top studio before it was cut up, pose for pictures and signs autographs. She is an atypical celebrity who comes across like a normal human being.
This book is an interesting read from beginning to end. It starts with the breakup of her last marriage which was the one that got the least coverage. It was a pretty rough experience once she realized #3 was robbing her blind and sending her into a mountain of debt much like #2 millionaire shoe magnet Harry Karl did. The tenacious Reynolds is willing to admit that she was blinded by trust, but she fought the good fight trying to reclaim what was rightfully hers. It was nice to know that she was mad but she was also someone who didn't let that anger consume her. She got back up, went back to work, and bailed herself out of debt to resume her career and jump start it at a time when most people would kick back poolside and down pitchers of margaritas.
The reality is that Reynolds has had a long and productive career that wasn't going to necessarily be either. She came to Burbank CA by way of El Paso TX during the Depression. Her family wasn't rich in the conventional sense, but they were loving, close, hard working, and honest. Debbie got into show business by way of a beauty contest that had a talent component. She saw movies as her way to make some money so she could go to college and become a Physical Education teacher. The rest just sort of fell her way. She loved to perform and audiences loved her and still do.
This book is crammed with anecdotes about Debbie's career and her friends (famous and non-famous) that she has met along the way, as well as her family which include her daughter Carrie, son Todd, and granddaughter Billie. She talks about Carrie with a mother's deep concern but also intense pride. Ditto for her son and the rest of the family.
Ava Gardner, Gene Kelly, Carleton Carpenter and Liz Taylor are among those included. Surprisingly after an estrangement of several years mended fences with Taylor pretty easily. This part had me laughing because they both seemed bonded by friendship and their misfortune to have been married to the less than stellar Eddie Fisher.
There was so much in this book that I found interesting. Reynolds has never lost the capacity to be a fan and her stories of life at MGM are amazing. I also loved her description of how she doggedly tracked down old Hollywood artifacts and scoured the studio auctions for costumes and other pieces of Hollywood history. One thing she clarified was the shady history of trying to find a permanent home for her collections. I found myself wondering why so many people dropped the ball on this one and her explanation of all the false starts was sad but true.
By the end, what you get is a frank, no frills look into the life of a woman who is a force of nature unto herself.

Ever since I saw Tammy and the Bachelor 57 years ago, I've been a Debbie Reynolds superfan. That makes me predisposed to like this memoir. But I think anyone would enjoy it, even those who are not overly familiar with her work. This is a tale of a woman who doesn't know the meaning of the word "no," refuses to be "counted out," and has energy galore. Her previous memoir ended with her wedding to her third husband, and as she recounts here at the beginning of this book, everything in her life was rosy and she was convinced that she would live happily ever after with the man. Unsinkable is largely the story of how that marriage went wrong, how the man took advantage of her, how he rooked her out of millions of dollars, how he destroyed her dream of a hotel that would house her multi-million dollar Hollywood memorablilia collection, how his connivings eventually resulted in her having to sell off her beloved collection, and how she bounced back, paid off her debts, and is still performing today. In fact, she says--at age 83--that she will be performing as long as she is able, to which she adds, "looking at my watch--that may be the next twenty minutes." Debbie Reynolds is remarkable for her ability to laugh in the face of diversity, for her power to pick herself up and dust herself off, and her love for her two children, who apparently worship her. In the book, we briefly get an account of her divorce from Eddie Fisher (the scandal of the early 1960s, when Fisher left Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor,) a cursory examination of her marriage to Harry Karl (who, too, took her for everything she was worth,) and her renewed, enduring friendship with Taylor. All this is couched in a detailed account of her third, and her word "last", marriage. The second, briefer, section of the book recounts memories of many of her movie roles, the stars she worked with, what she learned from them, and what she learned from the work. That section was not as compelling to me as a reader as the first three quarters of the book, but it was enjoyable nevertheless. One of Debbie Reynolds's two favorite roles is that of Molly Brown in The Unsinkable Molly Brown. I can see why, for Debbie is truly and unequivocably "unsinkable."

The Hollywood star system was just coming to an end when Debbie Reynolds got her unexpected break into the movies. Much of that period of her life is covered in her first memoir, "Debbie Reynolds:My Life". at the end of which Debbie met and married her third husband Richard Hamnett. This book will tell you how it all panned out (clue: not well), how Debbie struggled to create the Hollywood memorabilia museum that was a life's project dear to her heart, and how she managed to retain her sense of humour through all the dramas and heartache. Sadly, Debbie's greatest fear came true when she outlived one of her children, Carrie Fisher predeceasing her by a day. Reynolds left behind a legacy of joy and priceless screen moments from her movies. There is much joy to be found in this book too, as well as the dark times. A really good read.

This was a very nice read. Easy to follow and very interesting. I would like to locate her first book as it would have been much better if I had read that one first. This book gives a little history on each of the movies she made and plenty of info on her married life and certain media coverage. All in all, a good read and I would recommend it to anybody who enjoys Bio's.
Thank you, G. Brown

I really loved the book.As well as giving us an honest insight into ms Reynolds' life It also brings back memories of the "old" Hollywood as seen through her eyes .It made me immediately want to go out and buy all the films she mentioned. Many people would have "sunk" because of the terrible things that happened to her. I never felt that she wrote the book blaming others for her problems and drowning in self pity.Quite the contrary ,she takes full responsibility for her part in her terrible choice of men e.g Eddie Fisher etc. men that were responsible for her problems.Men that used her financially and emotionally.I have been trying to get hold of the first book she wrote ,unfortunately unsuccessfully, but ,like Ms.Reynolds ,won't give up until I succeed. So as you may have gathered,I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who grew up watching films from the 40s and 50s.Anyone who grew up wanting to be Tammy.Actors that were icons of their time come across as thoroughly human. Great!

I am a great fan of Debbie Reynolds so I was eager to purchase the book when it came out. I could not put the book down once I started it. There are a lot of highs and lows in her life and she was not afraid to let everyone know, and she did rise above it all like a true great lady she is. If you love anything about Hollywood then this is the book for you, you do not even have to be a Debbie Reynolds fan. The book is well written, interesting and certainly worth every penny of the purchase price. Debbie has had an exciting life so far and long may she continue to do so.
