The book is a fast, fun read though. The introduction of The Artifact gives an interesting spin to the usual cops-who-don't-get-along-become-friends (or more) trope. Flynn getting used to managing his newfound skills does give some interesting insights into his personality. Parker is genuinely likeable, and the ease with which he provides help for Flynn makes sense given his personality is established as someone who is supportive in all of his roles. Points also for the narrative gymnastics in the latter part of the story, drawing out the tension and leaving the reader guessing.
I see that the sequel to this book (Walk a Mile) is double the length in pages, which is a good sign. I will definitely be picking that up!
I am happy to see that the next book is available for me, right away, because this book set up our characters and their story - but left some important things unanswered. Which is okay, this was labeled as "Book 1" so you can prepare mentally for lots of questions and only 1/2 of them being answered. I'm off to buy the next one, because I love these characters...and their cats...and can't wait to have the "artifact" mystery finally revealed.
I would say that focus of the story is more on the guys learning about each other while investigating the case and accordingly realizing their attraction. Author uses strange plot device to help them do so. I say strange device because it usually takes me right out of the story when fantastical element is introduced in the world which is basically our world without careful incorporation of such element in our world. Basically as blurb says John gets strange powers.
I mean, it obviously HELPS them to get to know each other, but it felt I don't know rather artificial to me. Otherwise the story was well written, and beware I guess sequel will follow since the main killer is not revealed at the end.
Also there is only one sex scene, for those who care. It makes sense, since one of the guys is supposedly straight (I guess bi now) and needs time to realize his attraction and I again wonder would have he if he did not receive those powers?
Special Agents Flynn and Parker are very well written and the character development comes at a nice, steady pace, not rushed and not draggy, and the editing is excellent. Few, if any, grammar/sentence structure/spelling disasters so one can sit back and enjoy the ride through the story.
The story is great! A plausible answer for the parnormalness (?) that ties these two hotties together. The mysterious, impenetrable Flynn - hot as all git out - and the wanting to be loved, yet I won't anyone in, Parker makes for some fireworks worthy sexy! Oh yeah!
I've enjoyed this so much I went right out and got the sequel: Walk a Mile.
I love finding a good, new to me author!
Good going, Ms. Sarah. :D
