Heat 2: A Novel Kindle Edition
Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller!
Michael Mann, four-time-Oscar-nominated writer-director of The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Miami Vice, Collateral, and Heat teams up with Edgar Award–winning author Meg Gardiner to deliver Mann’s first novel, an explosive return to the universe and characters of his classic crime film—with an all-new story unfolding in the years before and after the iconic movie
“A hard-boiled, cinematic read that moves as fast as a well-planned heist.” —Esquire
One day after the end of Heat, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) is holed up in Koreatown, wounded, half delirious, and desperately trying to escape LA. Hunting him is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Hours earlier, Hanna killed Shiherlis’s brother in arms Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) in a gunfight under the strobe lights at the foot of an LAX runway. Now Hanna’s determined to capture or kill Shiherlis, the last survivor of McCauley’s crew, before he ghosts out of the city.
In 1988, seven years earlier, McCauley, Shiherlis, and their highline crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago. Driven, daring, they’re pulling in money and living vivid lives. And Chicago homicide detective Vincent Hanna—a man unreconciled with his history—is following his calling, the pursuit of armed and dangerous men into the dark and wild places, hunting an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.
Meanwhile, the fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative, driving through the years following Heat.
Heat 2 projects its dimensional and richly drawn men and women into whole new worlds—from the inner sanctums of rival crime syndicates in a South American free-trade zone to transnational criminal enterprises in Southeast Asia. The novel brings you intimately into these lives. In Michael Mann’s Heat universe, they will confront new adversaries in lethal circumstances beyond all boundaries.
Heat 2 is engrossing, moving, and tragic—a masterpiece of crime fiction with the same extraordinary ambitions, scope, and rich characterizations as the epic film.

“Heat 2 is just dynamite.” — Associated Press
“Mann's long relationship with his central protagonists, and fondness for research, are evident on almost every page of this propulsive universe-expansion. . . . Reading this novel, and the cliffhanger ending, definitely leaves you wanting another book set in the same world.” — Entertainment Weekly
“Mann’s brooding moments of sublime isolation are there in abundance, combined with Gardiner’s deft touch for modern thrillers. The result is an intensely satisfying crime story.” — Crimereads
"Riveting. . . . The best thing about this innovative tale is the way the fully fleshed human stories support and even transcend the often-breathtaking action." — Booklist [starred review]
“Prepare for an epic journey of the seven years before the bank heist that would change all of their lives and the events that unfold afterward, bringing in a new cast of riveting characters. . . The world of international drug cartels and crime syndicates has never been so gripping. Heat was a cinematic spectacle, and this sequel manages to create the same immersive experience in written form.” — Library Journal (starred review)

"A genuinely exhilarating expansion of the movie’s world, complete . . . some truly jaw-dropping, bullet-filled set pieces." — Rolling Stone

"Mann’s stunning prequel/sequel to his 1995 classic. . . an intoxicatingly relentless gem. . . a novel to be devoured more than once." — The Film Stage
“There is something kind of wonderful about making the prequel/sequel a novel rather than a film… Mann and Gardiner have produced an excellent thriller. . . Heat 2 goes full The Godfather Part II.” — Austin Chronicle
“Heat 2 is a classic of the crime genre . . . Realism permeates Mann’s world, and the world he created in Heat was rich enough for the writer-director to decide that he needed to expand the universe further. . . . It dives deeper into the rich criminal underworld and complicated lives of his thieves and cops. . . . If you’re a fan of the crime genre, you can only hope we get more from [Mann] and his crew soon.” — The Spectator World

"For those of you who can’t get enough of his 1995 film Heat, widely and reasonably regarded as his masterpiece, well, now there’s Heat 2, a gritty, vivid, 468-page second helping that delivers the goods and also goes to surprising new places.” — Museum of Moving Images
“Michael Mann’s Heat is one of my all-time favorite movies. Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner’s Heat 2 is now one of my favorite suspense novels. The voice of this book is a brilliant melding of the way we talk and the way we think. I must confess I did put the novel down occasionally, but only because I didn’t want it to end. I’m already quoting lines from Heat 2 to my writer friends (shamelessly saying the lines are mine).” — James Patterson
“Heat 2 is a brilliant and riveting novel with rich and real characters and powerhouse storytelling that represents one of the most authentic evocations of criminals and the cops who hunt them down that I’ve ever read. The first novel from Michael Mann (and Meg Gardiner) is a tour de force that works as a standalone but also honors, deepens, and expands Mann’s iconic film by placing all the key characters in an intricately detailed and emotionally involving new story that takes place before and after Heat.” — Don Winslow
“FANTASTIC!... It’s incredible! Absolutely LOVED IT!” — Jack Carr
"The novel glistens with the cool Mann became famous for in his hip, shiny TV series “Miami Vice,” the great, claustrophobic film “Collateral,” and, of course, “Heat” . . . . I can't wait to experience the next installment." — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"The best novel of 2022 (or any other year) . . . . Mann orders you to see what he sees and, if you've watched any of his movies, the connection between his words and his signature filmmaking is instant. If you haven't watched any of his movies, you'll end up wanting to." — SF Gate
“Heat 2 gives us an exciting, emotionally rich thriller, with just as much style and panache as Michael Mann's original classic heist movie. I loved it.” — Adrian McKinty, #1 international bestselling author
“Awesome! This novel is a stunning achievement in character study, narrative form and action. I am in awe. A stunning page-turner every bit as masterful as the original movie. Easily one of the finest novels of the year!” — Steve Cavanagh, #1 international bestselling author
"Heat 2 is an action-packed epic reviving beloved characters from a globally celebrated film. It is also a moving meditation on commitment—the rewards and the costs of giving your all. Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner have deepened the legacy of Heat—and given us one hell of a page-turner. A stunning, mammoth achievement." — Bill Beverly, author of Dodgers
"This audacious, powerhouse of a novel brings to the page everything the classic crime film Heat brought to the screen. . . Drawn by Mann and Gardiner with psychological and emotional gravity, the characters live their lives of crime and violence on the edge of a razor. The plot and the set-pieces of shootouts, heists, and crime-scene investigation are nails. The characters’ motives are obsessive. The details of police work and criminal enterprise, precise and revealing. The banter is quick and smart and memorable. And the metaphors and descriptions conjure up vivid, original images worthy of Mann’s best big movies." — Eric Rickstad, New York Times bestselling author
“[An] action-packed thriller.” — Denver Post

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023Michael Mann’s first novel - co-authored by Megan Gardiner - is fantastic! If you’re a fan of Mann’s original film HEAT or crime dramas in general, you will love this one. HEAT is in my top 5 favorite crime drama films, and Mann is somehow still able to capture the magic of what made that film special in his expansion of the story and the characters, doing so brilliantly in this different medium.
Mann takes an approach akin to THE GODFATHER Part 2, in that the book is both a prequel and a sequel for the characters from the film. The “present-day” storyline picks up with Vincent Hannah finalizing his investigation into Neil McCauley’s crew, while Chris Shihirlis attempts to flee Los Angeles, finding a new life and purpose on the run. The story then moves back and forth between 1988, 1996, and eventually 2000. Despite the time jumps, no momentum is lost in the storytelling. Just as in the original film, where Mann introduced multiple plot points that didn’t intersect until the third act of the film, Mann replicates that same result here brilliantly. The action-heavy climax in this story is very different from the classic bank heist scene and shootout from the film, but it is equally thrilling and intense.
Everything I knew and loved about Al Pacino’s Vincent Hannah and Robert DeNiro’s Neil Mccauley is brought to life on the page. The amazing fiery dialogue from Hannah when he is interrogating a suspect is just as electric and entertaining on the page as it is on the film screen. Likewise, McCauley’s cool and calculating approach to the planning and execution of his heists is ever present here just as it was in the film. Spending more time with these two lead characters was fully enjoyable for me.
While Val Kilmer’s character Chris Shihirlis played sort of “second-fiddle” to McCauley in the original film, his role is far more prominent here. I ended up really enjoying the arc of this character far more than I thought I would, based on what we knew of him from the film. Likewise, both Vincent Hannah’s and Neil McCauley’s stories in the past provide new insights into their characters, feeding into where we first meet them in the film.
To make this story distinct from the original film, however, Mann provides a straight-up villain whose path intersects with all of the characters, old and new. While McCauley and his crew were the clear antagonists of the original film, Mann still injected them with just enough humanity so they felt real and relatable. You could sympathize with them to a small extent, getting a window into the personal lives of Neil McCauley and Chris Shihirlis. Not so with this new villain! He is menacing, scary, mysterious, and incredibly smart, making him a force to be reckoned with by all of the characters, present in almost every setting of the story.
The conclusion to the story is quite satisfying while still leaving the door open for more to be told between two of the main characters. So I wonder if there will eventually be a HEAT 3 in some form. A part of me wishes that I could see this prequel/sequel brought to life on film, but this book is more than enough to satisfy that itch for more from Mann’s original masterpiece. I knew Mann was a brilliant screenplay writer on his own, but paired with Gardiner he shows he is just as good of a storyteller regardless of the medium.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2022A new Favorite Book from a Favorite Filmmaker, that's a prequel and a sequel to my Favorite movie of all time!
I've been eagerly awaiting the release of HEAT 2 since I learned about it last year...and the final product exceeds even my Highest expectations!! It's the exact kind of novel you would expect from a filmmaker like Michael Mann with short almost frenetic sentences especially during the action sequences but when it slows down and digs into the characters, it dives into details on some of the most fascinating characters that have even been on screen, and introduces new ones that are equally fascinating. I am a little surprised that some reviewers, "professional" and otherwise have downgraded the novel for this writing style because if they've ever seen a Michael Mann movie before they should have known this was exactly what and how he would write to start his new publishing venture.
For me, everything about this new book was Perfect and I had no idea where he was going with the fate of the survivors of HEAT which made the ending even more tense and exciting. At the risk of being overly dramatic, the ending left me breathless, just like I was watching a movie that completely sucked me in, and then as I reached the Perfect last sentence, I was torn between wanting to go back and start reading it again immediately, and putting it aside for a while to process what I had just finished.
I chose the latter and decided to add Mr. Mann and Miss Gardiner to my short list of reviewed authors and to urge other people wondering about this one whether they should or shouldn't to run out immediately and pick this one up and start it today! I'm Very Happy that he definitely sets up a sequel and sincerely hopes he follows up on that possibility, either in print or on film, and focuses more on a group he introduces right at the end of the book, that are very important to the finale, while only being given a few words to their description and time "on screen".
PLEASE PLEASE Read this book!! If you have ever seen HEAT or any Michael Mann movie, and enjoyed it, you will Not regret that decision!! Thank you Mr. Mann and Miss Gardiner for making this fan happy beyond his greatest expectations!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2025The flashbacks and forwards make it hard to follow. Still a great book if you've seen the original movie. He built a great universe where you can get truly invested in every major character.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025If you enjoyed the movie "Heat", this is a must-read. This move is both a prequel and a sequel to the movie. It jumps between the two timelines to give you more detail on the characters' histories that adds to their depth. And the sequel answers the question of what happened to Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer's character) after the movie ended. An enjoyable read that fits into the Heat universe.

NeecHMonkeYReviewed in Japan on September 22, 20225.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Prequel / Sequel
This book reads just like it’s a screenplay for a movie that doesn’t exist (yet). It captures the characters from the original film so well they feel alive on the page.
Thoroughly engaging and does a great job of further fleshing out what we’re already excellent characters.
ScottReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 20255.0 out of 5 stars For me.....Heat 2 is the juice.
Michael Mann comes out of no where with a sequel novel to a movie almost 30 years old and creates untold excitement for fans of the 1995 heist movie juggernaut with news that this novel will form the basis for the sequel movie. I will make no secret that I live and breathe this movie. The original movie changed the way I viewed cinema, Michael Mann's electric dissection of a crime ridden LA had me pondering what happened to these characters when the dust settled for many years. Until now!
YOU NEED TO WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST!
For those who have attempted to read this without being armed by the movie are making a huge mistake. It is a sequel and should be treated as such and not read in isolation. It assumes knowledge about the characters involved and throws you in at the deep end, albeit after a small recap of the movie. The book takes place over multiple time periods and uses events before, directly after and long after the events of the movie to flesh out the characters and provide substance and context to why they are the way they are. Without spoiling too much of the book, it focusses on a new big bad as the driving force for a lot of the plot in the form of a man called Otis Wardell, think Waingro from the movie but 100 times worse. This serves as a jump off point to show us some of McCauleys past and where Hanna and Chris are at since we last left them in the movie.
I felt this book was exhilarating, couldn't put it down and I was desperate to get to the end. As someone who has pondered over the ending of the movie for years, I felt I was getting a glimpse into something that should not exist. These characters being brought to life again was magical. The exploration of Neil McCauley and the further examination of Hanna was handled extremely well whilst remaining true to the characters. The book also doesn't pull any punches and fully gets you down in the mud with some of the worst humanity has to offer in the criminal world.
The book proceeds at a great pace and Mann/Gardiner do an excellent job capturing the feel and dialogue established in the movie. When Hanna is bouncing quips and high on amphetamines (now officially confirmed) I can hear Pacino's cadence through the page. The time jumping works very well and serves to inform the plot and adds to the intrigue rather than being a distraction with the reader begging to get back to the present timeline. The action throughout is very well written, with Mann's trademark attention to detail, and makes me extremely excited to see what happens when this eventually gets put onto film.
My only criticisms would be that initially I took a little adjusting to the prose as it is short, punchy and I was worried it was going to read a little like a screenplay. This was a none issue and I quickly settled in for the epic ride. Some may find Chris Shiherlis's transformation a bridge to far, but given how little he was explored in the movie I was happy to buy into it. A lot of the novel focusses on him, for obvious reasons from the movie, but I couldn't help but wanting some more focus on McCauley and Hanna.
This book is a triumph! Something that should not exist and for some reason Mann has put pen to paper and given it to us. This whole thing is made even more exciting by the news that Mann has just turned in his first draft of the screen play to Warner Bros as of March 2025. What is even more intriguing is that the book very clearly sets up a sequel, with more novels and obviously by extrapolation maybe even more movies! I am extremely excited and in the words of Vincent Hanna.....

JamesReviewed in Australia on December 3, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Better than the movie?
Seriously, we will have to wait until Heat 2 hits the screens before we can make this assessment but De Niro's calm stillness portraying Neil is something to behold - certainly as good as anything that he has done in his long and varied career.
This is essential reading for Mann fans and features the same clear vision which he conjures up in all his films. I loved the way that the authors were able to write the plot around the original film - most original and evocative.

I've always been obsessed with the movie and when I went to LA, I adamantly visited the location where they shot the FAR EAST NATIONAL BANK robbery scene. This book is AMAZING. I'd give 10 stars if I could.
