There was just something about this book I didn't really connect with. It's pretty much just like the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
--couple meets, has a whirlwind courtship, marries, then years later discover the other has been hiding a secret.--
Alex and Evie were both great strong characters, I actually loved the fact that even though both hid this other part of who they were from each other not once did they doubt each other's love.
So why only 3 stars? We kept getting teased that maybe Alex and Evie's bosses knew about the other were trying to out their secrets, but it was never mentioned. You would think that having someone working for Alex like Martin, who can seem to hack ANYTHING he would've been able to find out about Evie.? Also I get that the author was trying to make Alex a caveman alpha male, but the way he hovered over Evie while on their mission, he should know would put her in more danger than what she was in. She's been an assassin for years, she can take care of herself.
Hero: This hero comes out shooting…over the top possessive of the heroine…insta love…jealous of attention she gets from men…obsessed with the heroine from the get go…and to top that off…not a man whore. He loves the h very much and would do anything for her. I loved it when he confesses to the heroine when they were about to get physical that he was clean and had not been with anyone in about five years. Yowza…I hear that like never in all the books I have come across.
The story: The theme is similar to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It starts off with the two already married for four years after a brief flashback of how they got together. Neither knows that the other works as a spy. It only comes to light when the h whom is as assassin tries to take out her target that she sees her husband with her target. The story then gets fun because both find out that they are working for different agencies. However, each is familiar with the other’s reputation by his/her professional codename and they wind up working together on the same case. The two have unmistakable chemistry and you cannot help but be drawn into them and their story.
Heroine: A strong no nonsense heroine who can take care of herself..just look at her profession. She loves the hero very much and would also do anything for him. I think this is one of the few times I do not have to say the heroine is TSTL or is a doormat. She is the H's equal.
It was an entertaining story with two characters that I loved. I would have liked to see more flashbacks of the couple when they first met to the time that they got married. I was somewhat disappointed to start reading about the couple four years into the marriage. They would have had a heck of a courtship given the nature of both characters.
Crazy thing is, they are the top in their known field and this job that they are doing, brings them so close to danger. There are twists and turns between them and in their job while Alex and Eve were hunting the baddies down. I loved how alpha Alex was and protective toward Eve he was, even though he knew she could take care of herself while Eve was very independent and knowledgeable, sassy and sexy and she was just as protective of her hubby. I enjoyed this Mr. and Mrs Smith like type read. I enjoyed the ending and cant wait to see what is next by this author.
My rating: 4.6 stars ****
