Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This 1991 companion to German director Wim Wenders's film sets a high water mark for the intelligent use of cutting-edge popular (and we're using that term in its broadest sense) music on film, deservedly cracking onto critical lists for the best releases of that year, period. The contemplative thriller's setting at the end of the millenium is answered by a remarkable repertory of artists including Talking Heads, Neneh Cherry, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Patti Smith, Jane Siberry with k.d. lang, T-Bone Burnett, Daniel Lanois and U2, a de facto dream team. Nearly all these performances were unheard at the time of release, and beyond the evident marquee lustre there's an underlying cohesion to the sense of yearning that prevails. Both Cave and U2 build powerful songs around the title theme, Elvis offers a brilliant Ray Davies cover, and the Siberry/lang classic, "Calling All Angels," summarizes the spiritual underpinnings of this thoroughly modern, ultimately timeless classic in film music. --Sam Sutherland

It is the soundtrack of a movie that I like a lot and one of the most powerful rock albums of the 90. It is not available on Spotify, at least in Mexico, only a few songs. It arrived very quickly. Thank you very much, very happy with this purchase

I loved this soundtrack when it came out and had always wished it had been released on vinyl. Years later I did find out it had been released in Germany, Brazil and a general European vinyl edition. Unfortunately, it was a single disc that omitted half of the songs and was very expensive. This double release on vinyl is amazing! The sound is phenomenal and, unlike quite a few new pressings of other records I have encountered, no skipping. It is definitely worth purchasing!!!

Wim Wenders's film "Until the End of the World" (1991) combined romance, suspense, international adventure, and millennial anxiety in a striking manner. The film received mixed reviews, but its soundtrack, featuring work by many prominent modern-rock artists of the time, was widely praised. Listening to it again, now that twenty years have passed, I found it an effective expression of what was going on musically in those days. It is my understanding that Wenders asked the artists who recorded songs for his film to try to envision what might be going on, musically speaking, at the turn of the millennium, and to record in that spirit. Accordingly, I tried to listen to the songs in exactly that vein. The score music, by film-score veteran Graeme Revell, is appropriately melancholy and foreboding -- heavy on the cello, yet with a nice world-music quality that matches well the film's movement among many different countries. Talking Heads' "Sax and Violins" is a fun, upbeat song that received a lot of airplay back in the early 1990's; if you were around at that time, and were listening to an alternative-rock station like WHFS in the Baltimore-Washington area, you no doubt heard this song on the radio. Julee Cruise's "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears" has a vaguely Latin feel, and the languid, haunting quality of the song reminds me of Cruise's work on "Twin Peaks" -- again, one is placed firmly back in the early '90's. Neneh Cherry's "Move With Me" is atmospheric, combining spoken-word delivery with syncopated percussion, often around the refrain "addicted to the rhythm." "The Adversary" by Crime and the City Solution is evocative and menacing, with low-timbre vocals and a middle-8 section that sounds more hopeful. Lou Reed's "What's Good," another song that received strong airplay at the time, has a heavy-metal introduction and conclusion that frame an uptempo song with lyrics that emphasize paradox and irony -- relatively cheerful stuff for Lou Reed, I must say. CAN's "Last Night Sleep" is straightforward if unmemorable, and R.E.M.'s "Fretless," with its gentle guitar-and-piano delivery and stark vocals, would have fit right in on that band's famously melancholy 1992 album "Automatic for the People." Elvis Costello's gentle, muted, nostalgic "Days" is for me a highlight of the album. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "(I'll Love You) Till the End of the World" starts with a spoken-word interlude that seems forced, a bit pretentious, perhaps unnecessary; but the chorus of the song is evocative and powerful. Patti Smith's "It Takes Time," like a number of the other songs on the album, emphasizes the synthesizer as an instrument, as well as spoken-word delivery; but if anyone can make that work, Patti Smith can. I may not be qualified to review "Death's Door"; Depeche Mode's too-cool-for-school vocal style never did much for me (aside from their stylish rendition of "Route 66"), but the song does fit well with others on the album. Jane Siberry and k.d. lang's "Calling All Angels," another song that received plenty of airplay back in 1991/1992, unfolds slowly, with rich vocals and fine harmonies; its wistful and hopeful qualities stand out on what is otherwise an often grim album. T-Bone Burnett's "Humans From Earth" combines a bluesy acoustic guitar with sardonic lyrics about imperialistic Earthlings visiting another planet and assuring its inhabitants that "You have nothing at all to fear; I think we're going to like it here." Daniel Lanois has done effective film-related work in the past, as with his song "The Maker" from Billy Bob Thornton's film "Sling Blade" (1993), and his song "Sleeping in the Devil's Bed" is comparably effective. And U2's "Until the End of the World," another heavy-airplay song of that time, fairly bursts with energy, and benefits from The Edge's staccato guitar style. Does this album truly anticipate what would be going on in popular music at the turn of the millennium? Not exactly; but it works well as a fine soundtrack for an intriguing film.

Win Wenders wrote to a number of recording artists he wished to be in soundtrack of his next film. The requirement (a soft one) was that the work submitted be as they thought their style might evolve into over next 10 or so years. He thought one or two might respond- about three quarters did. The works are all enjoyable and one or two are really, really good as opposed to really good.
