Not one I'd read again, but had some moments that made it a decent read.

I was on the fence about this book. Part of me enjoyed the relationship between Dake and Cara, but the other part of me was overwhelmed by all of the drama forced upon them! I think Dake rescuing an infant and hiring Cara to be the nanny was a pretty interesting plot choice all on its' own, without adding all the conflict that we find once they get to Alabama. Sometimes I feel like authors think the story needs more situations, when sometimes I just want to read a nice love story about 2 people who fall in love over time, usually bound together by a hardship that brings them together. I thought the love scenes were a bit forced and again, I think less detail is actually better, than giving the entire love scene out in graphic description. I think I would like to give Ms.Landis another try with a different book and see if this is her normal formula, or just a swing and a miss on this one.

Great, great story. Literally couldn't put it down. Wonderful story line. Having lived in Kansas all my life, I was so proud of Cara . The book gives you a true picture of the south after the war and a way of life that they were unwilling to give up even in the face of defeat.

First time reading this author book and it definitely won't be the last. This is a historical romance with lots of great facts of the American history. I enjoyed this book immensely and really fell in love with the female character Cara. I love the fact she loves so strongly and unconditionally. This book also has some information on how the KKK started and I found that very interesting to read. Looking forward to reading many more of this author's books!
