Betty later insisted that she had only stayed in the marriage because a divorce would disgrace the family and she wanted to reap the benefits from all of her years of hard work as a part-time clerk, saleswoman, etc., and full-time Mom. She made the personal decision to fashion herself after the Irish matriarch Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, but this ultimately proved fatal. Betty Broderick did not have the right personality to sustain a long-term healthy marriage and this proved to be her undoing.
Betty certainly had a right to have half of Dan's fortune, joint custody of the kids, and a luxurious lifestyle for the rest of her life, since she worked her tail off putting him through medical school and then Harvard law school. Dapper Dan was apparently a greedy bastard who decided to sue doctors for a living instead of becoming one. At the time of his death, he was the most hated and feared medical/malpractice attorney in the San Diego area. Many doctors in California and elsewhere were not sad that he was finally bumped off by his former spouse. He had offered her $16,000 per month, but this was not enough for her. Betty probably deserved more. To be honest, I would have let him go and kept spending his money. And I would have insisted that he raise the kids full time and put them all through boarding schools. But I hope I would have been in the frame of mind to not have resorted to harassment and murder.
Still, she was obsessed about being dumped for the other woman, refused to get therapy for her narcissistic personality disorder, and wanted to make life as miserable as possible for her former husband and their children. Between the time that Dan walked out in 1985 and the time of the murders on November 5, 1989, just seven months after their wedding, Betty had continually harassed him and his mistress/second wife Linda Kolkena Broderick with a barrage of countless obscene phone calls, many of which contained messages of her vicious threats to kill both of them. She didn't want Dan back because she loved him; she only wanted him back to save face, remain Mrs. Daniel T. Broderick III, and prevent him from being happy with someone else.
Betty took the low road and chose the wrong way out by murdering her ex-husband and his new bride as they lay asleep in the master bedroom of their multi-million dollar mansion, firing five fatal shots, leaving behind two corpses, a phone ripped out of the wall, and a king-sized mattress soaked in blood. It was a premeditated, cold-blooded crime. I personally believe that she should have received the death penalty since being in prison all these years hasn't improved her outlook on life. Even after all this time to reflect, her oldest son, the third of her four children, insists that his mother still doesn't believe to this day that she did anything wrong. She killed two people who may have prevoked her in a somewhat smug, meanspirited way, but she utterly destroyed the lives of her four children and three families: her own, Dan's, and the family of Linda Kolkena. Oprah herself said it best when she tried talking sense to the totally clueless, unfortunate Mrs. Broderick via satellite from prison on the second highest rated broadcast in the history of her show:"Betty, Betty, Betty."
I cant even count how many times I said "Oh no Betty" shaking my head while reading this. I still maintain that Dan was cruel he definitely played his part and could have handled things differently. You could see he was enjoying making her suffer. But you can see maybe he thought he was getting revenge on what must have been a really hard person to be married to. Hearing the things she said to her kids I can only imagine the things she said to Dan. She had quite a mouth on her and no empathy for Anyone but herself. And just like Dan seemed to forget he was married to a bitter spiteful woman and egged her on. Betty seemed to forget she was married to a top notch lawyer and just seemed to count on her ego to save her.
There were So Many Things Betty could have done. To help her kids. To get more money. To help herself. And she refused to do them. She just refused to let go of her anger. She refused to do anything that would have made her feel better. She held on to her anger past the point of reason. Its really too bad no one was able to step in and help her. It was clear she was out of her mind with fury way before she killed Dan and Linda. It was clear she wasnt capable of looking out for her best intrest or the kids. But it seems like all anyone could do was watch her spiral.
I feel most sorry for her kids. She should have taken them back when she had the chance. At the very least it would have given her some purpose, company, and distraction. But I think she knew that and thats why she didnt. Betty more than anything wanted to hold on to her feelings of fury and injustice. Damn anything and anyone else.
This book did a pretty good job of showing both sides. I only wish there was more insight into what Dan was feeling. Where she was fire he was ice and very closed off. He had walls built around him so high no one seems to have really known him.
Also it was a bit repetitive as getting all the points of view brought you back to certain events repeatedly. By the time the book got to trial I was as exhausted by the story as Bettys friends must have been as she endlessly repeated it.
Very good book about the worst break up ever though. I could see myself reading it again or recommending it to friends going through break ups themselves saying "At least its not as bad as Betty and Dan.

But, Betty is Betty and to this day she still shows her "heels stuck in the sand" attitude regarding the killings. I feel that the children were the real victims and I felt terribly sorry for them especially the boys, as they were so young while all of this drama was being played out.
If the family were of lesser influence and didn't have pots of money I think the children would have been taken into care. They would have been better off in my opinion as they would have experienced some normalcy in their lives. What they witnessed and how they were treated as pawns has surely damaged them irreparably.
It’s difficult not to think she’s safer where she currently is, as a child of divorced Catholic parents I understood the forces which drove her to develop as she did.
Regardless she ruined her family and the chance to leave a selfish, narcissistic man with money and all the reasons she gives should not be used to excuse taking lives, even if he and his new wife were horrible.
