This 12-chapter documentary series, created and executive produced by Academy Award®-winning* writer/director Oliver Stone. As Americans, do we really know and understand our shared and complicated history? Our family is usually skeptical about "the history" of any event, country, or person. After watching this series on Showtime, my son who is a History Teacher (he shared with us about being skeptical until you research it and locate the facts vs. fictions or flat out lies) decided to obtain more information using FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) as he was a FOIA Coordinator for the Federal Government before moving on to become a Teacher at a major University. He located all the information that Mr. Stone put forth and we all read for ourselves just how accurate this series is. This is why I (we) gave it a 5-star rating. I have no political views regarding this series, just wanted to verify the facts. I have no desire to argue politics or some ideology. Wish they had taught this in our history courses when we were young. This is very much well worth watching or reading. Thank you.

Ever wondered why history in school was so boring and cliché with memorization of dates to be regurgitated on tests? Always the who, what, where but a less than honest or incomplete why? It is really no wonder why much of the world cannot understand why much of the American people really don't know the macro picture of what is going on (past and present). Most TV news media coverage, insight and commentary borders on laughable magazine show coverage. If that is how you inform your self, rise above the white noise and get this DVD set. One must know the true realities of the past to connect the dots to the realities of the present. The tiny number of news corporations that control your TV information input will not assist you in this endeavor.

As this information is quite dense, I highly recommended that you purchase the book also. Reading the book and following the DVD series helps with the mental organization and memory reinforcement. However, the book time line starts out in late 1800s and the DVD series starts out in the late 1920s great depression. The book also covers the widespread general American anger towards post WW1 war industry profiteering and Wall Street excesses that took place (surprise!) just before the great depression. The book is also heavily footnoted for further research or fact checking if desired.

As an avid reader from many sources, I attempt to form objective opinion based on facts. Many of the facts presented in this book and DVD series have caused me to largely re evaluate my thoughts on the FDR administration, the real reason for the double atomic bombing of Japan, the Truman Administration and the real root cause of Cold War with the Soviets.

Oliver Stone's entertaining and informative "Untold History of the United States" takes another look at important events that shaped our country during the last 100 years, from The Great Depresseion through Obama's current term as President. Unsung heroes like former Vice President Henry Wallace are praised for their forgotten efforts, while well-regarded figures are examined in a new light. It's very well-researched and presented with little to no flagrant bias: if nothing else, Stone intends this series to educate younger generations about the things no longer being taught in schools (or taught incorrectly). The inclusion of movie clips to enforce or contrast his facts and opinions can get a little old, but it also helps to break up these 10 one-hour episodes, which are loaded with plenty of rare historical footage and narrated by Stone.

Warner Bros.' Blu-ray serves up a nice packaging job, a solid A/V presentation and a bonus disc of extras included two one-hour prologue episodes and a feature-length companion documentary with author/filmmaker Tariq Ali and Stone. The series doesn't look to be available on DVD for now, making this Blu-ray all the more essential for history fans and those with an interest in their country's past, present and future.

Oliver Stone's uncompromising look at our history is an important counter-point to our tendency towards self-congratulation in matters historical. Stone illuminates many important facts of modern history that have not exactly been suppressed by other sources, but conveniently forgotten in favor of some sometimes rose-colored versions of what happened. Put simply, we were not always the "good guys" on white horses and the "bad guys" were sometimes made worse by our behavior towards them. Duplicitous behavior is a facet of all nation states to a greater or lesser extent, and Stone reminds us that we are not immune from this. We did not always make the world a better place; the best man did not always win; we were not always merciful towards our enemies.

This will be hard for a lot of people to watch. Some will find it hard because they might feel that they have been "lied to" by mainstream history teaching. Others will find it hard to watch because they will be outraged at Stone's audacity in challenging their patriotic vision of America. Unlike Stone, many of those outraged parties will not be combat veterans. Unlike Stone, many of these "patriots" will not bother to verify their facts before launching condemnations of what he is trying to say.

To all those people, I say "stick with it", the truth, uncomfortable as it can be, can teach us important things about the world and ourselves, but we have to be open to it. The truth is indifferent to your ideological preferences, don't allow your ideological preferences to make you indifferent to the truth.
