This 12-chapter documentary series, created and executive produced by Academy Award®-winning* writer/director Oliver Stone. As Americans, do we really know and understand our shared and complicated history? How do we recall the small details and forgotten players that influenced some of the biggest events from America's past? Will our children actually get the whole story from reading history books? And how will it affect the future of our country?]]>

As this information is quite dense, I highly recommended that you purchase the book also. Reading the book and following the DVD series helps with the mental organization and memory reinforcement. However, the book time line starts out in late 1800s and the DVD series starts out in the late 1920s great depression. The book also covers the widespread general American anger towards post WW1 war industry profiteering and Wall Street excesses that took place (surprise!) just before the great depression. The book is also heavily footnoted for further research or fact checking if desired.
As an avid reader from many sources, I attempt to form objective opinion based on facts. Many of the facts presented in this book and DVD series have caused me to largely re evaluate my thoughts on the FDR administration, the real reason for the double atomic bombing of Japan, the Truman Administration and the real root cause of Cold War with the Soviets.Read more ›
Warner Bros.' Blu-ray serves up a nice packaging job, a solid A/V presentation and a bonus disc of extras included two one-hour prologue episodes and a feature-length companion documentary with author/filmmaker Tariq Ali and Stone. The series doesn't look to be available on DVD for now, making this Blu-ray all the more essential for history fans and those with an interest in their country's past, present and future.

This will be hard for a lot of people to watch. Some will find it hard because they might feel that they have been "lied to" by mainstream history teaching. Others will find it hard to watch because they will be outraged at Stone's audacity in challenging their patriotic vision of America. Unlike Stone, many of those outraged parties will not be combat veterans. Unlike Stone, many of these "patriots" will not bother to verify their facts before launching condemnations of what he is trying to say.
To all those people, I say "stick with it", the truth, uncomfortable as it can be, can teach us important things about the world and ourselves, but we have to be open to it. The truth is indifferent to your ideological preferences, don't allow your ideological preferences to make you indifferent to the truth.

I admire Stone but was disappointed in this. Well edited with ample historical footage. Stone narrates the entire string of episodes and makes multiple revisionist assertions... Read morePublished 8 days ago by R OMeara
