First let me mention that I got very lucky last year, just as I was giving up hope on historical romances and rereading my favs from Susan Johnson & Brenda Joyce....I found Elisa Bradens The Devil is a Marquess, one of my favorite books ever & gobbled up everything she wrote. Funny thing about Amazon sometimes they point you to other authors of like mind, and low and behold I gobbled up Luck is no Lady by Amy Sandas. It was a great read! So I went back and enjoyed all her other books. I felt very lucky ladies, I was struggling and almost stopped reading the genre.
But I digress, my point is, we all have favorites in a series and although this one doesn't beat Luck is no Lady, I enjoyed the brave writing. This is a dark subject, a dark man, a man who feels everything and yet claims he is unfeeling. Its a tough read. But well written. It may not be my cup of tea but its truly written well. Which is why I gave it 5 stars. I'm sure there are tons of reviews that summarize it, I'm always cautious not to ruin plot too much but....
Lily is an interesting h shes one of three sisters trying to pay off a debt of her fathers, I wasn't quite sure how I felt. When she was kidnapped and then offered that up with no thought? I had to suspend belief of time of era and convince myself to just enjoy this book. But I also think if were going to have a dark H like Harte, he was going to need a h who could be strong emotionally and truly take his problem on. When I think of all the shrinking violets of that era, I know this author wrote the best h she could for the H.
This book isn't at first romantic, but if you go into it with the knowledge that this man truly has a disability hes ashamed of, is in the peerage (hes an EarL) and everything else from his childhood thats piled on him, its amazing the man has a heart at all. So it is romantic I guess really. Which is what this book is really about. Lily peeling the layers one by one ever so slowly and drawing those emotions out of the H without him realizing it. Not only was Lily brave, so was he.
Every once in a while you get a book like this, the epilogue didn't quite end like Id want but I'm hoping for more clarification from Portias book. The thing with this series is they all run the same timeline as one event, so I would really read them in order if I was you, and Luck is no Lady is one hell of a romantic book, with amazing characters so its worth it to go back and read in order.
I'm looking forward to Portias book, and I'm sure some people want Hales book, but the book I really REALLY want is Bentleys half brother the Earl of Wright. So I'm just throwing that out there in the universe. Cheers and happy reading.
