The Untouchables (Season 4): Don't believe everything you read ... there is absolutely no drop in quality regarding this last season of an absolutely CLASSIC TV series. It may possibly be considered the lesser of the 4 seasons, but the acting, production values, guest stars ... all contributed to a fantastic and worthy program ... making "The Untouchables" probably one on the BEST classic TV crime-series of all time (ranking right along side "Hawaii Five-0"). It could well be that the Desilu Studio interests began to lose concentration during this final season and began expanding their efforts into other areas. Also, there were probably not too many more stores to be told (exposed) during this brief span of the Eliot Ness chronicles (1929-1933). I would have savored a final fifth season to wrap it all up, but the TV Gods denied that. All in all ... I own all 4 season sets ... and they are at the TOP of my collectible TV favorites (which are quite numerous and varied). This was a one-of-a-kind series and it will always be that. Enjoy and embrace what you will never again experience from a time back when you never expected such greatness.

season 4 was very tame for this series-gunfire was kept at a minimum--thats probably why there was no season 5-very little action and NO frank nitti-the italians finally won out-the politically correct crowd won this one and killed a good show-THIS season did NOT in anyway compare to the other 3--which was action packed--i bought it just to complete the seasons set--but VERY DISAPPOINTED--same goes for vol 2

I read a lot of commentaries about this 4th and last season. And they're problably right but what Desilu did with this show is amazing and the quality of writing is still there. Thanks to CBS, they finally released the 30 last episodes. In France, we have only the three thirst seasons and not this one ! So I enjoy myself to own it and to finish my collection.

Picture : 5/5.
Sound : 3/5.
Extras : 0/5.

For me, "The Untouchables" stay the best TV Show of the 50's. It always reminds me when I was a kid (In France the show was broadcasted in the 70's). Robert Stack will be forever Eliot Ness in my heart and my mind. RIP : a great man and a fantastic actor !

This is very disappointing. I loved the first three seasons, but this is beyond lame. Desilu was using the show to showcase proposed new series: Barbara Stanwyck and Ed Asner tracking missing persons, Dane Clark and John Gabriel as contagious disease investigating doctors and Scott Brady as a one eyed globe trotting reporter.. All dominate the episodes they're in and it's a waste.

There's a few goodies. Frank Nitti returns in a later episode and makes you realize how important Bruce Gordon is to the show. Lee Marvin, James Caan and Roy Thinnes star as brothers in a great episode. The best, though, is when the ever present Nehemiah Persoff returns as Jake Guzik to team up with Harry Morgan as Bugsy Moran. But these great moments, so prevalent in the first three seasons, are just too few in this volume.

The first three seasons of this show were great, but I was hesitant to order season 4 volume 1 based on some of the reviews on Amazon. Also, both volumes of season 4 costed much more than seasons 1-3. However, I liked the previous shows so much, I took a chance and bought S4-V1 to see for myself. After watching the first two episodes, which were really slow paced and had way too much dialogue from a couple of the guest stars who droned on and on like actors in a Shakespearean play, nearly putting me to sleep, I figured I had made a big mistake getting this set. I was about to eject the DVD disc and just write this season off and watch something else, when I decided to give it one more chance. This was a wise decision as the remaining episodes were for the most part almost as good or equal to the ones in seasons 1-3.

As in previous seasons, lots of actions scenes were recycled to save money and the Frank Nitti character only showed up once, but many of the guests from earlier seasons like Telly Savalas, Lee Marvin, Frank Sutton, Ed Asner, Milton Selzer, Nehemiah Persoff, and Frank de Kova reappeared as different characters. I will be ordering Season 4 volume 2 soon to complete my collection, and hope it's as good as volume 1.

As other reviewers have stated, it seems Desilu was trying out ideas for spinoff series and one of these involved Barbara Stanwyck and Ed Asner as investigators tracking down missing persons for the Chicago PD and two episodes were devoted to this. Maybe the new series was to be called the UNTRACEABLES.
