Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Readers are introduced to a passel of near-alien life-forms from a wide diversity of habitats. There's the hammer-headed bat (Africa), whose noise is not a high-pitched squeak but a resonant HONK! as loud as a car horn. The giant Gippsland earthworm (Australia), has a 10-foot body almost as thick as a garden hose. And the Yeti crab (South Pacific), a blind, deep-sea dweller with long, thin yellow hairs covering each of its legs. And they are just for starters. In alphabetical order, these 50 unusual creatures trundle/swim/fly/crawl through the pages, with illustrations, global distribution maps, and a scientific classification chart as guideposts. Pen-and-ink illustrations abound, washed over with soft pastel colors. Paragraphs of chatty, informative text provide data on habits and physical characteristics and are enriched with boxes of interesting facts. Also proffered are true/false Q&As, pop quizzes, and the like. The text is introduced by a clear section on scientific classification and is rounded out with hints on leaving a smaller "footprint" on our planet, a list of conservation organizations' websites, and some nifty information on the author and the illustrators. Personal in tone, chatty, and intriguing in subject matter-a sort of "Guinness Book of Animal Oddities"-this handsome volume is a fun-for-all informative compendium.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2011. I got this book a few weeks ago and it is awesome. The first day I got it I sat down during my daughter's nap time and read the whole thing! Halfway through I thought I should take a break but every page is so great I kept saying to myself "One more... okay, one more..." I took it to a family gathering and my 6 year old sister insisted I read her pretty much the whole thing and then my dad picked it up and he read most of it too! Needless to say, this book is great for all ages. The artwork is great and there are lots of funny little stories and comments inside. There is just enough info on each creature to spike your interest and if it really sparks something you can always look up more online. My only regret is that I didn't have this book as a kid or I might have had a more interesting "favorite animal" than a dog!

Such a cool book for children - I bought it for my 7 year old nephew, but my 8 year old son loves it too. I would say it's great for primary aged children wanting to know some weird facts about super huge snakes or weird things found in forests!

I love learning about strange animals and facts so after seeing this book advertised in the back of BBC Wildlife magazine I knew I had to have it. I already have the QI book of animals so this one had a lot to live up to.

The book is wonderfully presented and has fantastic illustrations, its clear to read and to the point- no useless fluff to fill out the book. I definetly learnt about a few new animals and some interesting facts about ones I am already aware of such as Wombats.

The book is suitable for adults and teenagers though I am sure young children will love looking at the pictures!

My only problem with this book is that I would have liked to see more animals which is why only 4/5 stars. However it is a case of quality not quantity here!
