The premise of this story may sound familiar but zero Milan has a way of executing these familiar story tropes in a way that is unique and empowering to her characters. Ash and Margaret are simply amazing. Ash makes Margaret see herself as empowered -- as a person who makes things happen rather than having things happen to her. He gives her the confidence to see in herself the strength to make her own future.
Milan subverts the expectations of the reader and thus pulls her characters into being more real, more human.
I had read the synopsis of this book before reading it and had in fact put off reading the book because Ash sounded like a horrible person, but he is simply amazing.
Ash is wealthy and out for revenge. The Duke who let his sister die is now getting his just rewards: his children are being declared bastards and the dukedom will fall to Ash on the Dukes death. Which is fairly soon. So Ash goes to the family holdings to make sure the property is being managed properly and he meets Margaret, the Dukes daughter. Disguised as a nurse, she catches his eye and naturally sparks fly. She would love to hate him for destroying her life but she quickly learns that he is justified for hating her father. And darn him but he proves to be a great guy who genuinely wants to help her and even her brothers ... So long as he gets the Duchy. Margaret has to decide between her love of Ash and restoring her brothers birthright.
What I love about this book is that the characters dont waffle. They know what they want, they make mistakes in keeping with their character and they are so human.
I bought this to listen to in the car on a long drive, it is the first narrated book I have purchased from amazon. The narration was interesting, as the story was based in England some words were pronounced differently by the narrator than I pronounce them in my head which was distracting at first but I soon got used to it. I appreciated the ability to switch between reading and narration, though found that option to be more expensive than it was truly worth.
Anyway, this book was a great read. I thought it was very sweet how the hero falls in love with the h. He sounded so romantic and smart and just right ! He was very progressive, modern, protective, and so loving ! Not just to the h. His protective nature towards his little brothers is very touching. Also, I won't give this away but there is a secret the hero has and it was very beautiful (?) how he shared it trustingly with the h.
The heroine was a little wishy washy. I was not terribly sympathetic towards her. She was too martyr-ish. A real doormat. And worse, her loyalties at times were very misplaced and it was frustrating to read how she would NOT take a chance on love over and over again. She also kept putting off coming clean to the hero about her dirty laundry despite many opportunities in which to do so which I found sad because in comparison to her, he would bare his soul ! I guess that's what makes a good love story right? The way that love changes a person .... and how it can be a change for the better.
There were some weird discrepancies in the story that threw me off but not enough to take away from the real essence of the story so four stars. Maybe you won't even notice them, but despite them, I would still recommend this book.

The story is interesting and engaging. Nice plot twists and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
