Five minutes in and the main character practically rapes the "romantic" interest. Just because he's aroused doesn't mean he's not being coerced. If this is to be a were wolf behavior, we need to know that before molestation occurs.
We also need to know more about these two. Why is one running? Why is one stand-offish?
Gymnastics next to a football field? Not buying it. Well it to me. Why is that?
Next, the main character is said to like winding up said uptight lover having known the guy less that a week? There needs to be some character development and some passage of time and several encourage (not that we have to see them all, but we need to know how this relationship has grown to get here) to assume this kind of a relationship.
I couldn't get beyond the sex thing and then watch the assaulter tease the assaulted. YMMV
That said, there's not much showing going on and to much telling.
Pros: There are lots of things happening here. Many different angles and side-stories, so it’s so much more than a romance. It’s simply very much effort put into the story-line and basically a great plot.
Cons: Well, Darwin quite frankly acted a bit stupid. You know when the blond girl in a slasher-movie decides to go off on her own when there’s a crazed killer running loose? Darwin’s a bit like that, only he knows it's stupid but does it anyway.
Smut-factor: Low. There’s some nooky, but lube-less M/M shenanigans makes me cringe.
I've read one other book by this author and I loved it. (Moonrise). It was an adventure with lovable characters, a little angst, humor and enough sexy romance to satisfy. I expect equally good things from this book.
For now, I'll give this book 4 stars simply for bucking the tiresome tropes and cliches of most shifter M/M romance, especially for dispensing with the hated mpreg!
I vacillated over giving this two or three stars, and chose to go with three because the author obviously put a lot of time and effort into the book. It just wasn’t to my liking.
I really liked the plot and Jared and Darwin. There's nail biting moments, steamy encounters and room for another book following the pack.
