It has great seeds of wisdom. —Sen. J.D. Vance

The Conservative Establishment’s consensus of the past two generations has almost totally broken down. Conservatism was unable to stop or even slow the Left’s rolling revolutions in nearly every sector of American society—from classrooms to boardrooms, from the military to the culture at large. The Left has successfully transformed the nation over the past few generations, racking up victory after victory, with no clear end in sight. This is not sustainable for the country or the constituency represented by the Republican Party. For the Right to have a serious future, it needs to rethink its positions and think more deeply about the essential policy questions which will define the future of the country: race, men and women, sexuality, religion, the economy, foreign policy, and other major issues. This collection of essays, written by some of the Right’s most interesting thinkers and practitioners, seeks to reframe the ideological and policy direction of the American Right.

With essays by Michael Anton, Richard Hanania, Carson Holloway, John Fonte, David Azerrad, Helen Andrews, Scott Yenor, Joshua Mitchell, Aaron Renn, Arthur Milikh, David P. Goldman, Matthew Peterson, James Poulos, Theo Wold, Robert Delahunty, Jesse Merriam, Jeremy Carl, Eric Kaufmann, and Roger Kimball.

Editorial Reviews

Review

It has great seeds of wisdom.

—Sen. J.D. Vance

The Left’s advances across American life in recent decades must be dismantled and reversed. This book is an instruction manual for how to do so across a wide range of cultural and political theaters.

—Christopher Rufo, author of America's Cultural Revolution

This collection of essays lays out a roadmap for thinking seriously about the nature of the existential threats we face as a nation as well as first steps to be taken in the invigorating challenge of national renewal.

—Benjamin Braddock, writer, ecologist

For decades, conservatives have documented the left’s evisceration of excellence, intellectual integrity, and bourgeois standards of behavior.  The effect of their eloquent critique was exactly zero.  Up from Conservatism aims to change that record of failure.

—Heather Mac Donald, Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and the author of When Race Trumps Merit

The single best introduction to current trends among a number of younger American thinkers on the Right.
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023
This book is a deeply valuable contribution to the "conservative movement" today. The authors in this collection of essays offer sharp analysis of the cultural issues facing Americans today and critical examination of the missteps and failures of conservatives from the past few decades. But instead of mere hand-wringing or self-satisfied potshots at the Left (as is so often the case in this category of books), there are clear and specific proposals on both the policy- and ground-level on what can be done to build a better society. Despite the very real problems facing America today, this book is a reminder that this is an exciting time to be a conservative and a great time to be working and building with confidence.

This book is a disgrace. If this were ever implemented, we wouldn't recognize our country. They want to take away minority rights and take this country back to the '40s and '50s when even women didn't have many rights. This is a prescription for the country to be a WHITE CHRISTIAN NATIONALIST nation. The United States of America is about FREEDOM, and this book is all about taking those freedoms away!

Much needed corrective. Worth it for the bracing Anton, Milikh and Yenor chapters alone, which is not to take anything away from the rest of the estimable contributors' work—almost equally thought-provoking and that's saying a lot. For example, our universities have become nothing short of "evil," says Anton. A bold statement few academics will endorse publicly. In sum, if any of these Straussians indulge in the old esoteric/exoteric demur, one can only marvel.

Should the New Right overtake the establishment Right and succeed over the Left, a recognizable America could reemerge through the means outlined in this book. This volume outlines the trajectory the new right must take in order to have a shot at recovering what is left of America.

Anti-American propaganda that states how much people want to take rights away for no apparent reason!!

Rare it is for a book to be both ruthlessly honest about how bad things are and yet also incisively optimistic about what can be done to course-correct. The essays in this collection are particularly valuable because the authors courageously say what no one else on the Right will say. It seems most "conservatives" are possessed by the liberal pieties of the last 50 years that have paved the way for the cultural take-over by the Left in all the institutions that matter including the family, the school, and every facet of modern governance. By speaking so forcefully on contentious issues such as feminism and same-sex marriage, these authors help readers think clearly about the foundational matters in question. I cannot recommend more highly.

I liked the fact that essays don’t just repeat the same old cliches. The Right needs to think provocatively to break out of the establishment dead-end that led conservatism into perpetual loserdom.
From civil rights to education to the trans agenda, there are a lot of new ideas here that can help overturn the suffocating control of Leftism, which is destroying western civilization.
